Ateneo de Manila Grade School (AGS) reached a historic milestone Thursday, August 1, 2024, by welcoming girls into Kindergarten and Grade 1 for the first time in nearly 165 years.
Over 2,900 students, both new and returning, gathered at the AGS campus to kick off the 2024-2025 school year. This group included 200 girls, the first female learners in Grade School, with 72 joining Kindergarten and 128 starting in Grade 1.
AGS’s decision to admit girls represents a significant shift from its long-standing tradition as an all-boys institution. This welcomed change reflects the school’s commitment to inclusivity and its dedication to adapting to evolving educational standards.

Administrators and teachers donned vibrant costumes and headdresses in celebration of the milestone, while the AGS library mascot, Bibo, delighted the children with warm greetings and photo opportunities.
The excitement was further heightened by the Blue Babble Band and Battalion, the official cheer team of Ateneo, which cheered on both new and returning Ateneans from Kindergarten through Grade 6.
Classes at AGS for SY 2024-2025 were initially set to begin on July 29, 2024. However, due to the impact of Typhoon Carina on the community, the school administration rescheduled the opening to August 1, 2024.
