Audie Gemora on Windows 7 and “Mobile Parenting”

To say that Audie Gemora is a performer might be quite an understatement. This stage, television, and film actor, singer, dancer, director, and choreographer, has been involved with major productions both in the local and international scene and is showing no sign of slowing down.

“If it’s what you enjoy doing the most, you’ll always find something new to love about it and you will find yourself constantly trying to be the best at it,” he said about his passion for performing and entertaining people.

Gemora has been around the world taking on different personalities on stage, but one role that he considers most important is being a parent to Richard.

“You can call my technique mobile parenting,” he said. “I’m always out because of meetings and rehearsals but I make it a point to regularly communicate with my son. By doing so, I know that I’m able to guide him as he grows up.”

One of the tools in Gemora’s parenting arsenal is the Parental Control features of Windows 7. “Richard is already tech-savvy but he is still vulnerable to many threats online. The Windows 7 Parental Control features help me by protecting him and ensuring that he only gets to see appropriate material when he uses the Internet,” he said.

Found in Windows 7, the latest operating system from Microsoft, the Parental Control features enable parents to guide their children as they use the computer and go online by monitoring the types of games played, programs run, and Websites accessed by the children.

“The Internet has allowed greater access to information and increased people’s connectivity to one another. Unfortunately, this has also opened a world of threats, especially to children. The Parental Control Features which can be accessed through Windows 7 aims to address this problem and make it easier for parents to see the activities of their kids online and understand which of these might be harmful,” said Mae Moreno, Windows Client Product Manager, Microsoft Philippines.

“You can say that in this case, technology definitely helps me be a better parent,” Gemora said. His remarkable talent and drive made him one of the Windows 7 Icons, a group of individuals with notable achievements who also exemplify how technology helps people improve their craft and pursue their goals.


Technology for a cause
Gemora also participated in the Pay It Forward campaign initiated by Microsoft and chose the House of Refuge as his beneficiary. The orphanage was established to assist abandoned children in Metro Manila. In 2009, twin disasters struck House of Refuge. After being burned down, the orphanage in Provident  Village, Marikina, was also wiped out by Typhoon Ondoy, which flooded major areas of the city.

“The misfortunes were a big blow, especially to the 62 kids under the foundation’s care. I felt that giving them a Windows 7 laptop will not only lift their spirits but also help them get back on their feet,” Gemora said. “It’s a privilege to be considered as a Windows 7 Icon and I’m very happy to be part of the Pay It Forward Campaign and be able to give assistance where it’s most needed.”

“Technology isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind during disasters like this but it can be a huge help,” said Moreno. “We were amazed by the ingenious methods people used to communicate their needs during Ondoy. It just goes to show how powerful technology can be when applied,” concluded Moreno.
