After a grueling five weeks, the baby switching case that happened in Rodriguez, Rizal, comes to a close. And it’s a happy ending!
On the February 28 episode of Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS), moms Aphril Sifiata and Margareth Mulleno eagerly awaited the results of the DNA test performed on them and their babies. This would prove whether Aphril was the biological mother of the baby that was handed over to Margareth, and vice-versa.
The results of the second DNA test came back positive, with the probability of maternity at 99.99998% for both infants. This meant their babies were really switched at birth.
When the announcement was made, the two mothers could not help but become emotional. “Sobrang saya po, totoo po ang hinala namin,” Aphril shared.
“Masaya ako kasi siyempre makukuha na namin si baby [at] mababalik na sa kanila si Ayo,” Margareth said.
After signing a memorandum of agreement and with a lawyer present as well as representatives from the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the babies were returned to their biological parents.
“Sobrang thankful po ako sa program ninyo, kasi kung hindi po dahil sa program ninyo, hindi po namin talaga malalaman din ‘yung totoo,” Margareth tells Jessica.
ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOWAccording to Margareth’s husband, Kim Mulleno, the hospital got in touch with them, wanting to apologize personally as well as explain their side. They also offered a refund for the fees that the Mulleno family paid the hospital.
Despite being reunited with their rightful children, the two families will still push through with the complaint that they filed against the hospital. “Better to file a case para maging warning na rin po as well as lesson to other hospitals. They should do proper protocols and hindi nagpapabaya sa mga ganitong cases,” Kim said.
According to KMJS, the Rizal hospital is yet to give its formal statement regarding the incident.
Department of Health’s Regulation Licensing Enforcement Division-Calabarzon Chief Dra. Hermina L. Palaming said in an interview that the hospital board is still conducting an investigation.
“In case they are able to prove that the hospital made a mistake, the hospital will have to pay the fine of Php30,000, and then Php50,000 and revocation of license,” Dr. Palaming said.
It was on January 31, 2021 when KMJS first aired their investigation on the baby switching case, after Aphril raised suspicions about taking home the wrong baby.
First, the photo of the baby was different from the one that they took when the mom gave birth via C-section. Aphril's aunt also noticed that the name tag attached to their child had the wrong surname and birth date. The surname on the tag was Mulleno.
