Bianca Gonzalez: Breastfeeding May Be Unglamorous, But It's the Best for Our Children

  • TV host Bianca Gonzalez-Intal has once again expressed her support for all her fellow breastfeeding moms. The mother of two welcomed Breastfeeding Month this August with a heartfelt post on Instagram about motherhood and breastfeeding using a photo of herself and her girls.

“Breastfeeding is tough, unglamorous, exhausting, but I guess we do what we feel is best for us and our children!!!!” she captioned her photo, which is a very realistic snapshot of the life of a breastfeeding mom.

In the photo, Bianca’s robe is open halfway as she breastfeeds second daughter Carmen. Her legs are in an awkward position because her firstborn Lucia is trying to squeeze in and join them in the chair, along with her plushy toy. Bianca, seemingly uncomfortable, looks like she is wiping away tears.

“My firstborn was purely breastfed for 2 years, and now my second has been purely breastfed for 9 months, and I hope to reach 2 years as well!” she added.

Bianca gave birth to Carmen in October 2018, just a few days after Lucia turned three years old. It was also shortly after the TV host’s daughter had successfully weaned herself from breast milk, following two years of exclusively breastfeeding.

Being able to breastfeed her daughter for two years exclusively was a feat even Bianca was not expecting to achieve (she shares how she was able to sustain it despite having a low breast milk supply). She says she originally was only aiming to breastfeed Lucia exclusively for 9 months, “But every time I would think of giving up, for some reason, her milk demands would be less (as in less times in a day or less ounces), so I would figure, ‘sige, kaya pa naman.’ Until I reached 2 years,” she wrote in a post from January 2018.

She added, there is a truth you don’t see in a lot of curated breastfeeding posts on social media—that behind the perfect shot is a mom’s self-denial and sacrifice.

“When I experienced it the first three months—di ka naliligo, di ka kumakain on time. There are days that you cry. Sasabayan mo na lang yung baby mo kasi ‘di mo na alam kung bakit siya umiiyak. So I try to be more realistic about my posts kasi may culture shock, medyo may trauma talaga. I didn’t know what to expect,” she shared.

The struggles of breastfeeding are compounded when you have a toddler, Bianca realized soon after.

A week after her second daughter was born, she posted, “Right now, I’ve never been more exhausted, I would admittedly not survive without the help of our girls at home, and I’ve learned that balancing giving attention between your toddler and newborn is sooo emotionally taxing.”

But, with the help of a good support system led by her husband JC Intal, Bianca was able to make it, and now she’s been exclusively breastfeeding Carmen for 9 months—this, through hosting gigs, endorsements, a regular fitness routine, producing her popular vlog, raising a toddler, and building a house.

“With a good support system around you and the right things around you to help you, hopefully, number two will be easier,” she had said previously.
