Gymnast Carlos Yulo’s stellar career has allowed him to get more than just medals and worldwide recognition — his victories have also helped his family finally build a house they can call their own!
Yulo made headlines after claiming the gold medal at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championship in Stuttgart, Germany on Saturday, October 12, 2019.
However, according to a report on GMA News’ 24 Oras, Yulo’s achievements and incentives from many other competitions have helped his family build their own home even before his gold-medal victory in Germany.
Yulo’s mother Angelica shared in the report, “Beforehand pa kasi, wala kaming ganito. Wala kaming ganitong bahay, nakikitira lang kami. Nakikitira lang kami sa mother-in-law ko. Ta’s nung lumipat sila ng Cavite, nakitira kami ng matagal na panahon sa mother ko.”
When Carlos, nicknamed Caloy, started winning in various competitions, his family gathered all the cash incentives he received then put them together to save up for their own home.
Because of his latest win in Germany, Carlos is taking home not just a gold medal but also at least Php1 million.

Yulo’s mother also revealed that she and her family did not expect him to win because he was up against veteran gymnasts for the title. One can only imagine their surprise when they received a phone call from a coach in Singapore to tell them the happy news.
“Tumawag po si Coach Ricardo (Ortero) para sabihin sa amin ang resulta, nagkagulo sa bahay,” Angelica told Manila Bulletin. “Yung asawa ko nga hinahampas yung TV ng tuwalya sa tuwa.”
Yulo did not see his family for almost a year due to training, but now that he has returned to the Philippines, he will finally be able to reunite and celebrate his victory with the people who love him most.
