"Ill-informed, shortsighted, and backward" are the words the Department of Education used to describe the call for #academicfreezenow.
Atty. Nepomuceno A. Malaluan, the DepEd undersecretary and chief of staff, began the online press conference of DepEd today, September 9, 2020, by addressing the trending topic when September started.
"We would like to dismiss this call as not something that is supported by the direction of DepEd for learning continuity," Atty. Malaluan began his statement.
"We believe this call for the academic freeze is a populist position that is not popular because we already have the support of as many as 24 million learners and their parents who have enrolled and ready to participate in distance learning."
Atty. Malaluan also calls academic freeze a shortsighted position. "It does not take into consideration the trade-off of prolonged interruption in the learning process of the children and does not take into consideration the adjustments that have been made in the succeeding school year."
"We hope this matter [of academic freeze] will be laid to rest as a backward position."
Atty. Malaluan also dismissed the readiness issue when it comes to online learning, calling it an "ill-informed position" since Deped has been preparing for blended and distance learning since April.
To prove its point, DepEd, which has always stressed the importance of local governments' role to make the school year a success, asked several local government officials to present how their municipality is tackling the upcoming school opening during the online conference.
