The Department of Education (DepEd) announced on Sunday, April 7, that public schools across the Philippines will shift to asynchronous classes or distance learning on Monday, April 8, 2024. This decision comes as the nation prepares for the Araw ng Kagitingan and Eid’l Fitr holidays declared for April 9 and 10, respectively.
Completion of academic requirements
The memo emphasizes the DepEd’s commitment to ensuring that the learners have sufficient time to complete their pending assignments and projects, and other academic requirements without the need to physically attend classes.
It also clarifies that teaching and non-teaching personnel in public schools are not required to report on-site at their respective schools during this period.
Private schools
The advisory specifies that private schools are “not covered by this advisory but shall have the option to implement the same.” Notably, several private schools have already announced plan to conduct asynchronous classes on the mentioned date.
April 9 and 10 holidays
April 9 is recognized as a regular holiday in commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan,or Day of Valor. Additionally, April 10 was declared a regular holiday last April 4 in observance of Eid’l Fitr, “in order to bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness.”
Last April 3, the DepEd had also announced that schools could opt to suspend face-to-face classes and shift to modular learning to safeguard the health of learners and teachers from the extreme heat.
