The Department of Education (DepEd) has set the end of the school year (EOSY) 2023-2024 on May 31, 2024, Friday.
Thus, the EOSY break shall be from June 1 to July 26, 2024, Friday.
The start of school year 2024-2025 will be on July 29, 2024, Monday, and end on May 16, 2025, Friday.
This is according to DepEd Order No. 003, series of 2024, signed by Vice President and DepEd Secretary Sara Z. Duterte dated February 19, 2024, and published on the DepEd website.
This is an amendment to DepEd Order No. 022, series of 2023, which is the Implementing Guidelines on the School Calendar and Activities for the School Year 2023-2024.
DepEd moves school year 2023-2024 calendar end
The move is in line with the DepEd's MATATAG agenda, particularly "to Take good care of learners by promoting learner well-being, inclusive education, and a positive learning environment."
The DepEd order recognizes the clamor to gradually revert the school calendar to the opening of classes pre-pandemic.
DepEd stresses that the move was supported by its extensive consultations with teachers, learners, and relevant stakeholders. It's also echoed by the findings of the study conducted by the Philippine Normal University (PNU), entitled Analysis of the Basic Education School Year Calendar in the Philippines: Inputs to Policy in 2023.
No disruption in the students' learning, says DepEd Usec Poa
DepEd Undersecretary Michael Poa said that class days will be shortened by at least 7 days because of this revision.
"So ngayon ang ginawa po natin, mag-e-end tayo ng May 31, pero start pa rin tayo around July 29, and then slowly, i-mo-move natin siya back until bumalik tayo dun sa normal na April to May break," Poa said in an interview.
However, he assures that there will be no disruption in the learning of students.
"Talagang ito ang gusto ng ating mga kababayan. As you know, may survey na lumabas na majority of Filipinos want to go back to the April to May [school break]," Poa said in a report.
