Eric and Rona Tai happily announced the arrival of their first child last March 4, 2019. It was a magical moment for the Tais, who waited over seven years to have a child. They went through the process of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and survived bouts of chronic hypertension for Rona. Throughout the pregnancy, Eric was vocal about his desire to be a hands-on dad.
SmartParenting.com.ph caught up with the Tais during Meet My Feet's brand ambassador launch, and we asked Eric about his role as a dad to baby Legend, now 7 months old.
"It's been great, and we are really enjoying it! You know, kids cannot survive with their mommies, so I just make it a point to support my wife as much as I can," Eric said.
Eric proudly shares that he can do just about anything a mommy does – from preparing formula, to rocking the baby to sleep, and to changing dirty nappies.
When asked about his favorite moments with Legend, Eric fondly recalls their exclusive daddy-baby "sun" time when they brought him home from the hospital. Legend was heavily jaundiced, and Eric made it his responsibility to bring out Legend every morning.
"For two months straight, he needed sun! I never missed a day during the first two months, "Eric reminisced. "Kahit may trabaho ako, kahit may inaasikaso ako, he was my priority without fail. I would bring him out at 6:45 a.m. up to around 7:30 a.m., just to make sure he had enough sun."
Due to medication to manage her hypertension, Rona had to stop breastfeeding, and the couple now feeds Legend organic formula.
Despite being delivered prematurely, Legend had been a big baby at seven pounds and 52 centimeters. At 7 months old, he is heavier and taller than most babies his age. "We have begun feeding him his solids like kamote and squash."
Legend has also started crawling, and Eric devotes time to play with him. "He is daddy trained right now, we installed soft mats at home, and we let him crawl and crawl and crawl!"
The six-foot-one former rugby player and video game enthusiast is definitely sporting that new dad glow. He relishes his role as a dad and takes on what he can to give Rona her much needed rest.
"Whenever mom needs more sleep in the wee hours of the morning, or she needs to go to work, I step in and fill in her spot." Eric further shares that serving his wife is a crucial element to good parenting.
"My goal is to make sure she is happy! Happy wife, happy life. This contributes to our goal of having a great family and raising a good child."
