  • Three years after the late senator's passing, Heart Evangelista clearly remembers a "bilin" the lawmaker left her with: "Marry someone who loves you more."

This was one of the most important relationship lessons the actress learned from her friend, Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago

"'You need to marry somebody who adores you,' that's what she would always tell me," she told reporters during the launch of a beauty brand, Pep.ph reports.

"And I feel like I did."

Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago earned the moniker "Iron Lady of Asia" for her fearless political views and a career in public service that spanned four decades. And although she showed a tough persona to the public, she was a soft-hearted and nurturing lady, according to the Kapuso actress. Her sharp humor only added to her charm.

Heart, 34, and Senator Miriam, who was 71 when she passed away in 2016, shared years of friendship that transcended their 40-year age difference.

That Heart shared her fond remembrances of Senator Miriam during her recent contract signing with a beauty brand seemed very timely for Mother's Day. In 2016, days after the Senator succumbed to lung cancer, Heart paid her a tribute with a series of photos wherein she referred to her as her "second mom".

"You put so much happiness and positivity in my life that I just can't imagine I can't call you ever again," she captioned one of their photos.

"I love you my super hero. I will miss you my Cleopatra. I will be the luckiest girl in history to have you as my 2nd mom. I love you so much! Until we meet again my mommy m..." she captioned another.

It is interesting to note that it was Senator Miriam who introduced Heart to Senator Chiz Escudero, whom she eventually married in 2015.

"Every time I'd go through a breakup, it's so funny because she would pick me up," she lovingly recalled.

"She would pick me up in the middle of the night, and I would sleep in her house.

"We would talk about our relationship gone wrong and who I should be with, this is how I should be, that I should really love myself, treasure myself.

"'My god!' gaganyan, 'You're so beautiful!' gaganyan. And I remember that.

"She always told me that I needed to marry someone who loved me more because eventually daw, as a woman, when you have children, it will reach and you guys will meet at the middle with your maturity."

With Miriam gone, Heart mourned the loss not only of a friend, but of her hero and number 1 protector, too.

"When this photo was taken, a halo appeared on my screen. Indeed you were and will always be my guardian angel," Heart wrote as caption for another photo of the two of them she posted in 2016.

Looking back now, the actress feels nothing but love and gratitude that Senator Miriam taught her to be her own strong woman.

"I'm very, very, very blessed that I met such a queen like her."
