There is more to James Yap than being the other half of a celebrity power couple. Despite being a big-time player on the basketball court, behind the façade is a quiet, self-made man who loves his family and knows the value of hard work.
James admits that his passion for basketball will never diminish, but his love for family surpasses even his best court performances. Thus, he realizes that he should be securing his own retirement even at the peak of his career. After all, he would hate to be a burden to anyone when the time comes for him to retire.
It’s Never Too Early to Prepare for Retirement
With the resolution to prepare for his retirement early and to be more involved in his financial plans, James Yap joins other Sun Life advocates such as Pia Magalona and Bam Aquino, spreading awareness that there’s no better day than today to plan for and invest in your future. Here’s what James has to say on financial planning and retirement.
Q: When did you start thinking of investing for Baby James’ future?
I am aware that the earnings from a basketball career will not last forever. So, while I am still young I have started investing my basketball income in a restaurant business together with my celebrity friends and also in other investments and insurance policies which will be useful for me and also my family.
Q: Why did you agree to support Sun Life and their advocacy It’s Time!?
Because I am aware that securing my family’s future is important and that I should plan this while I’m still young and earning well I also like Sun Life’s message that we should be responsible financially at hindi maging pabigat kahit kanino, especially sa mga anak natin.Ayoko mahirapan sa akin ang pamilya ko pagtanda ko.
Q: When do you intend to retire from playing basketball?
I just turned 28 this February, so malayo pa naman sana. Ang sigurado ko lang, hindi pangmatagalan ang career ko sa basketball. Kaya dapat ready ako for that time.
Q: What do you plan to do next?
I want to expand my investments in restaurants. I also want to get into cold storage in the Bacolod and Iloilo area.
Q: How do you manage your earnings?
I get advice from those na marunong, plus I also discuss with Kris.
Q: Will your future retirement in basketball affect your lifestyle in a major way?
Yes, kasi retiring in basketball will mean that I will no longer have the same income. However, since I have investments na naman, that will help me a lot.
Q: Does it take a big amount to invest in a retirement plan?
No. You can start with small amounts pero siyempre depende rin ‘yun sa current budget mo pero ang importante lang naman, habang maaga nagsisimula na. Watch out for more of Big Game James and Baby James for It’s Time! For more information, visit www.itstime.com.ph .
