Typhoon #UlyssesPH caught the Philippines by surprise last night, November 11, 2020, especially those living in Marikina who woke up surrounded by water.
Marcy Teodoro, the city’s mayor, has now asked for air rescue and water assets for his citizens.
“Due to the strong currents, we need motorized (boats) and weather permitting, air rescue is needed because our citizens are already on the roofs,” Marikina Mayor Marcy Teodoro said in a CNN report.
"Ang tulong na kailangan namin, water assets ginagamit sa rescue operations," said Mayor Teodoro, according to Reportr. Rescuers also need equipment to get people from their roofs and terraces.
Marikina residents have described how water quickly rose even in areas that were not flood-prone. Mayor Teodoro, whose house is surrounded by floodwater, told CNN ,
“Napakabilis ng pangyayari. Tulad ngayon mahina na ang pag-ulan sa Marikina pero kita mo tumataas pa rin ang tubig sa ilang lugar.”
River rose by 21.9 meters at 12 p.m. But the local government was reportedly evacuating residents near the swollen Marikina River by 3 a.m. CNN reports that all 47 evacuation centers in the city are full, with some evacuees seeking temporary shelter in nearby homes.
According to Mayor Teodoro, the city has deployed 57 rubber boats, but it was not enough.
