The New Miss Universe Has An Equally Gorgeous MomMiss France's mom is a school teacher and a lecturer and was with her throughout the competition.by Rachel Perez .
With the whole world watching, Miss France, 24-year-old Iris Mittenaere, was proclaimed Miss Universe 2016, the second time that France has won in the beauty pageant. The last time was in 1953, yes, 64 years ago.
The final question for this year's Miss Universe pageant was: "Name something over the course of your life that you failed at and tell us what you learned from that experience." Iris's winning answer began with an admission that she has failed several times in her life, but she emphasized that the key thing is to try again and keep going.
"I failed several times in my life. So I thought I failed the first time I went out on a casting* because my name wasn't on the list. And the very next day, I found out that I was in a very new book. So I think that when you fail you have to be elevated and you have to try again and keep going," the new Miss Universe answered through a translator. "Tonight, if I'm not one of the winners, I would still have had the great honor of being one of the three finalists. So I think that I have failed before, but to me, this is a great opportunity," she added.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOWCONTINUE READING BELOWRecommended Videos

So who is Iris? According to her bio on the Miss Universe website, she has been pursuing her degree in Dental Surgery in the last five years. So it's no surprise that her one of advocacies as Miss Universe is to promote oral and dental hygiene around the world. Iris, who hails from Lille, the capital of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region in northern France, also has a love for extreme sports, traveling the world, and cooking new French dishes. (Her name is pronounced as 'Ee-ris,' according to Cosmo.ph)
And you know what they say about gorgeous, intelligent, strong, and confident ladies? That they probably take after their moms, and it looks like it's the case for Iris. Iris's mom, Laurence Druart, is a school teacher and lecturer, and as gorgeous as her daughter. Look!ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOWADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Based on Iris's social media accounts, she and her mom are close, and Laurence was in the audience when her daughter was declared Miss Universe. That's her above (far right) during the competition's dress rehearsal.
Back in December, Iris shared the above photo on her Instagram where she paid tribute to her mother. She wrote, which we have translated into English: "I get up with a little pinch in my heart, but thinking of my family present here tonight. Really happy to have shared this beautiful adventure with you...You are my strength, my pillar... This bond with you, Mama. I love you." Awww.
According to Pep.ph, Iris is one of this year’s most-followed Miss Universe contestants on social media. She has the fourth most followed Instagram account among the Miss Universe contestants (343k followers, as of this writing), and the most number of Twitter followers among the candidates at 52,000.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier won first runner-up, and the crowd favorite Miss Colombia Andrea Tovar is the second runner-up. And though our Miss Universe bet this year, Maxine Medina, only reached the Top 6, she’s always a winner in our hearts. Congratulations to all winners!
*In French, Iris actually said, "in my first year of medicine," not "casting" as was said by her interpreter.
