  • Staying married is no easy feat, and though actors Nonie and Shamaine Buencamino make it look easy, they reveal they had gone through some very difficult challenges in their 29 years together, and at times were on the brink of breaking up.

In the June 7 episode of ABS-CBN's Magandang Buhay, Shamaine shared what she considers the most difficult part of their married life.

"Ako, yung unang pinakamalaking hirap na dinanas ko—tignan mo nahihirapan pa rin ako—Nonie went through addiction.

"And it came to a point where I had to choose to fight for our marriage, to fight for us to stay together, or to leave him kasi hindi ko alam where it will lead him."

Shamaine says she almost left Nonie. "He was making empty promises," she said.

However, knowing her husband needed her in this dire time, Shamaine did what she had to do.

"Naghanap ako ng rehab. And buti na lang Nonie valued our marriage enough to agree because at first, ayaw niya rin talaga."

The couple also revealed how they went through financial struggles when they were just starting out. As theater actors, their earnings were barely enough for the two of them, that when they decided to get married, it was their friends who chipped in to make the occasion possible.

"Ang direktor namin, siya bumili ng rings. May nag-sponsor ng reception, yung ganun.

"Yung stage manager, yung production manager, sila yung nag-arrange ng logistics, nag-solicit ng funds."

The only expense Nonie paid for was their wedding certificate that cost Php 2,000. That was all they could manage with their salary of Php 3,000 each per month.

"Nung nabuntis ako, that's when Nonie decided to leave the company and go into show business. Yun talaga ang nag-push sa kanya."

In all the challenges they've faced, Shamaine says it was only their faith that got them through.

"Yung mga times na grabe yung problema or yung dahilan na para maghiwalay, napakasuwerte ko na I really hear God.

"Sa halip halimbawa na i-confront ko siya, ang naririnig ko is, 'Call this friend.'

"So di ko siya kino-confront muna. Kakausapin ko yung friend ko. And then yung kaibigan ko will help me to deal with the problem—lalo na yung mas mahaba na yung experience kaysa sa amin.

"Iyan yung nag-uumpisa pa lang kami."

Shamaine and Nonie's faith got tested even further four years ago when their 15-year-old daughter Julia was found dead at home in an apparent suicide. It is what Nonie considers the most difficult time of their life yet.

He said, "Ang isa sa malaking challenge ay, halimbawa, ikaw masamang-masama ang pakiramdam mo, 'tapos yung ka-partner mo at mga kasama mo sa bahay, ganun din.

"So dapat turn by turn kayo. Tapos hindi kayo dapat nawawalan ng pag-asa sa buhay."

Their relationship advice: choose to be together. The couple whose marriage is founded on years of friendship says staying married is "a choice to stay together.

"If you believe in your vows and you believe that God has put you together, then let no man put you apart."

"It's a vow, so keep to your vow—'Til death do us part.'"
