A Pinoy janitor working in Canada has won $7 million in a lottery!
Vito Halasan, who works as a janitor and lives in Surrey, a province in British Columbia, Canada, won the jackpot prize during the April 27, 2019 draw of the 6/49 lotto. Manila Bulletinreports the total prize is equivalent to more than Php270,000,000, based on the Bangko Sentral ng Philippines (BSP) exchange rate as of May 29.
The win was made even more special for Halasan since he found out he hit the jackpot only a few days after his 58th birthday.
According to a press release from the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC), Halasan migrated to Canada from the Philippines in 2009, along with his family. Halasan has three children and four grandchildren.
The press release states that Halasan contacted his daughter after he realized he had won.
“He sat me down at the table and then he whispered really quietly to me that he won $7 million dollars,” Halasan’s daughter shares. “I didn’t believe him. We had to check online several times.”
She wasn’t the only one who had a hard time believing what was going on — Halasan himself was astonished.
“I remember scanning my ticket and seeing all these numbers,” he says. “I have really blurry vision, so I had to hold the ticket right up to my face. I couldn’t believe it.”
Despite becoming a millionaire, Halasan says he has no plans of quitting his job as a janitor — though he does intend to work less hours from here on out.
He says, “I buy lottery tickets so I can dream. I dream of being able to take care of my kids and make their future better. Now we’ll be able to buy a nice house for my children and grandchildren.”
