Pope Francis Passes Away

Pope Francis passed away at 7:35 AM in his residence at the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta. The announcement came over two hours later from Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber.

"Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis," the camerlengo said.

"At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized."

The statement concluded, "With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God."

The news came as a shock to many, as Pope Francis had just appeared in public on Easter Sunday. Although he seemed quieter than usual, he still addressed a massive crowd in St. Peter' Square and delivered the traditional Easter blessing from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.

A new report released by the Holy See Press Office on Monday evening confirmed that the cause of death was a stroke, which led to a coma and ultimately irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse.

Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, Director of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene of the Vatican City State, issued the official certification.

The Pope's death was confirmed through electrocardiographic thanatography. "I hereby declare that the causes of death, to the best of my knowledge and judgment, are as stated above," wrote Dr. Arcangeli.

According to the medical report, the Pope had a prior history of acute respiratory failure caused by multimicrobial bilateral pneumonia, multiple bronchiectases, high blood pressure, and Type II diabetes.

Pope Francis' Long Battle with Respiratory Health Issues

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, had long struggled with respiratory issues. In 1957, as a young man, he underwent surgery to remove part of a lung due to a serious infection. As he grew older, these health challenges recurred more frequently.

Pope Francis' declining condition had been the cause of concern in recent years. In February 2025, the Pope was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital after several days battling bronchitis. On February 18, his condition worsened, and doctors diagnosed him with bilateral pneumonia. After spending 38 days in the hospital, he returned to the Casa Santa Marta to continue his recovery.

In April 2024, perhaps anticipating what lay ahead, Pope Francis approved an updated edition of the liturgical book for papal funeral rites. This revised Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis includes new guidance on handling the Pope's remains, moving the moment of death ascertainment to a chapel setting and calling for his body to be placed immediately in the coffin.

According to Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, the late Pope had requested that his funeral rites be simplified. He said, "The renewed rite seeks to emphasise even more that the funeral of the Roman Pontiff is that of a pastor and disciple of Christ and not of a powerful person of this world."

As the Church and the world prepare to bid farewell, the date and details of Pope Francis' funeral Mass have yet to be announced. His passing marks the end of a historic papacy, defined by profound humility and a tireless advocacy for the poor and marginalized.
