The earthquakes that shook Cotabato and Davao del Sur in Mindanao on October 16 (magnitude 6.3), October 29 (magnitude 6.6) and October 31 (magnitude 6.5) have resulted to loss of lives and property, and rendered many people homeless and without access to food and other basic needs. Children, especially, have been severely hit by the lack of services.
According to Save the Children Philippines, an estimated 3.2 million children have been affected by at least five powerful earthquakes in the southern Philippines over the past three weeks, with two strong quakes recorded on October 29 and October 31. More than 180 classrooms have been completely destroyed. “Most of the 3.2 million children affected are in conflict-affected and marginalized parts of the Philippines where access to emergency services is scant,” said Save the Children's chief executive officer Atty. Alberto Muyot.
Based on figures from the Department of Education, most of the children suffer from psychosocial stress, miss out on school due to damaged classrooms, and from being displaced from their homes.
