Power couple Richard and Lucy Gomez are not discounting the possibility of a second baby through IVF. But if it were up to the congresswoman, she and her husband, 53, would get pregnant again naturally.
Lucy Torres-Gomez, 44, is already a mom to 18-year-old Juliana, but in the past she has hinted at desiring to have another child. Thanks to technological advancements, that dream can be achieved through in vitro fertilization (IVF) — if they choose to.
Last June 23, at the 3rd Piña Festival in Ormoc City, Pep.ph had the opportunity to sit down with Richard and Lucy for an interview. It was then that the couple revealed they are considering going the IVF route to have another baby.

Said Richard, “Last month, I told Lucy, ‘What about the idea of freezing our sperm cells and eggs just in case ba, one day, we want to have another baby?’ Sabi ko, I think it’s a good idea din.’”
IVF is a form of assisted reproductive technology where the egg is fertilized with the sperm in a laboratory, until such time that the fertilized egg (embryo) can be implanted in the mother’s uterus. Such procedures are usually recommended for couples who find it challenging to get pregnant. It used to be very costly, but with the technology now available in the Philippines, the price is not that prohibitive anymore.
Richard explained to Pep.ph that he and his wife are still weighing the pros and cons of the procedure, because Lucy still has reservations about it.
“Ang ayaw lang niya kasi dun sa idea na, if you want to bear a child, you have to fertilize mga five eggs, ‘tapos pipiliin mo kung ano yung pinakamalakas, ‘tapos ika-cull mo na yung maiiwan. Yun ang ayaw niya,” he explained.

Should they decide to push through with the plans, Richard is certain Lucy will want to carry the baby to term herself, as against the option of having a surrogate mother.
“Ayoko kasi ng surrogate mother, e. Kasi, alam mo yung… blood transfusion nga lang, coming from another person, meron kang mapi-pick up from that person. What more if that child grows inside another person?” says Richard.
“Maaaring yung traits nung bata, makuha niya yun dun sa nag-carry,” he added.
As for Lucy, she’s still not sure about the whole idea of IVF, and if she wants to do it.
“Hindi ko lang alam if that’s something we will eventually do or consider.
“Kasi ako, I’m always na parang all in God’s plan and time.
“Parang, life for me is the art of the possible ba, and also acknowledging that there is somebody greater ang bigger than yourselves.
“All my life naman, marami akong ipinasa-Diyos, ipinaubaya sa Kanya.”
Always the obedent child of God, Lucy knows that, just as she famously prayed for her partner in life (who turned out to be her crush since she was 12 years old), having another child is one of those things that she will once again ask divine guidance for.
“God, this is what I want, but give it to me according to Your will.
“If it’s meant for me, it happens. If it doesn’t then, so be it,” she said.
