  • Parenting really does bring out the best in people (and sometimes the worst, too). Ruffa Gutierrez, 45, used to be a magnet for controversy as a young actress, but these days, the mom of two is more cautious with her actions with two pairs of eyes constantly watching her: her daughters’.

Now that Lorin, 16, and Venice, 15, are at an age when their social lives are expanding, Ruffa says her rules for her daughters are more relaxed compared to how her mom, Annabelle Rama, was with her. Anyone who grew up in the ‘90s knows how strict the Gutierrez matriarch is.

“My mom is unique, one of a kind. Di ba nanunugod pa yun?

“Kahit holding hands nga lang, nagagalit siya sa set!

“For me, okay lang ang holding hands sa mga bagets ngayon, you just have to teach them.”

What Ruffa is extremely careful about is how her daughters see her and the example she provides, especially when it comes to her online behavior. The single mom says she doesn’t want to be told off by her daughters for committing the same blunder she is berating them for.

“I am very careful also of what I post or how I act online kasi sometimes, puwede nila sabihin sa iyo, ‘E, bakit ikaw?’”

    “Ako, ayaw ko marinig yun.”

“You have to also set an example to them, so I would like to lead by example and actions.”

One of the things she is particular about is how her daughters would handle relationships and receive their suitors, although she says there aren’t any yet.

“Sabi ko, ‘Lorin and Venice, if you have suitors, they have to come to the house and give me fruits!’” – only because her first suitor brought a basket of fruits during a visit.

Nonetheless, the actress does not discount the possibility of becoming like her mom when the time comes. For now, she’s enjoying not having to worry about it.

“Hindi pa rin ako ready, baka lumabas pagka-Annabelle Rama ko.”
