Sesame Street’s 55th Season Teaches Kids Emotional Literacy

Elmo and friends are back! Sesame Street returns on January 16, kicking off its 55th season. Fans can catch brand-new episodes first on MAX before they air on PBS stations and stream on PBS Kids.

As seen in the trailer where Elmo and Cookie Monster sing with celebrity Reneé Rapp about "big feelings," the latest season brings exciting new stories, guest stars, and a renewed focus on helping kids navigate their emotions. For today's parents, Sesame Street is familiar because it's the show that taught us the alphabet, counting, and other literacy fundamentals. The beloved show has kept up with the times, teaching emotional intelligence in its new season.

Sesame Street's New Season Tackles Kids' Emotional Well-Being

Season 55 focuses on emotional literacy, helping kids recognize and manage their big feelings. Executive Producer Sal Perez talked about the importance of this theme in an interview with Parents, saying, "Sesame Street has always been about meeting kids where they are. This season, we're focusing on emotional well-being because it's so relevant to families today."

"Sesame Street has always focused on exploring topics that are most relevant to kids today, and emotional well-being is just that. We leaned on our strengths, which is working closely with our Curriculum and Research teams and educational advisors who are closest to those issues facing kids today," Sal elaborates.

The new episodes feature heartfelt storylines, including one where Elmo gets angry after his block tower is knocked down. The season also introduces a Volcano puppet who teaches calming breathing exercises. Fan-favorite Muppets also return to model resilience and emotional awareness in ways that resonate with young viewers.

Apart from 2024 Mean Girls star Reneé Rapp, guest stars including Michael B. Jordan, SZA, Noah Kahan, and Billie Jean King join the fun. For Sal, seeing these celebrities light up when meeting the Muppets is a reminder of the show's enduring magic.

The season also ventures into new territory with 'Mecha Builders', Sesame Street's first 3D CGI segment. These shorts showcase Elmo and friends solving STEM-related problems, and they get their own 3D character models.

Season 55 is set to be visually striking even beyond 'Mecha Builders', with a set design that Sal says could rival any blockbuster film.

"I'm excited about every new element of the season. Emotional well-being has been such a fun element to show the different emotional sides of our characters and the range that they all have. We manage to showcase important emotional well-being messages inside hilarious and joyful romps on Sesame Street with your favorite characters," says Sal.

For over 50 years, Sesame Street has stayed relevant, evolving with the times while keeping the charm that kids and families worldwide love. The new season is definitely something to look forward to!
