  • Abbott Laboratories, makers of Similac TummiCare One Infant Formula, has voluntarily recalled a batch of infant formula due to inconsistencies in label instructions and the size of the scoop included in the can, which is used to prepare the milk.

In an advisory released by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Abbott informed the government agency of the voluntary recall of a specific batch of Similar Tummicare One Infant Formula (820 grams) after receiving a customer inquiry regarding the scoop size and preparation instructions.

According to the FDA, “the affected batch contained a smaller red preparation scoop compared with the white preparation scoop that is shown on the label instructions.”

The specifics of the affected infant milk are as follows:

    • Batch No. 03518QU
    • Manufacturing date: March 2019
    • Expiration date: March 2022

Note: The batch number is found at the bottom of the can.

“Although Abbott Laboratories has not received any adverse event reports for this incident, the company has decided to proceed with caution and voluntarily recalled the product from the market,” the FDA notes, emphasizing that the recall only applies to the specified batch and no other Abbott Laboratories products are affected.

While there are inconsistencies in the scoop and label instructions, the formula milk is still safe to consume.

“However, if the red scoop is used to prepare the formula according to the label instructions and provided to an infant as sole source of nutrition, it would not provide sufficient nutrition to support normal growth,” advised the FDA.

On our Facebook group, Smart Parenting Village, some moms shared that they’ve encountered the red scoop from the affected batch. “Iba ‘yung scoop niya — red tapos maliit. Two is to one (2:1) ang timplahan nyan kaya malaking puti dapat ang scoop,” shared one mom.

Luckily, she had kept the scoop from another Similac TummiCare can and used that to prepare formula milk for her baby instead.

Another mom commented that after calling Abbott Laboratories, she got a replacement formula milk for her child.

If you have purchased Similac Tummicare from the affected batch, you may contact the Abbott Laboratories hotline at +632 955-1555 for Manila residents or 1-800-10-995-1555 or email familyties.ph@abbott.com to seek a replacement or full refund.
