The bond between a parent and her child is innate — it is expected for a mom or a dad to love someone of his own flesh and blood. But the sad reality is some parents get separated from their kids, whether intentionally or by chance (and it goes both ways, too — not just dads, mind you). When that happens, the remaining parent has no choice but to play the roles of both mother and father.
With Father’s Day coming up, touching tributes are pouring in for dads (and moms who double as dads) everywhere. This year there’s a special breed of fathers a beer brand ad would like us to turn our attention to: stepfathers. Because when someone unrelated willingly takes over the job of a biological parent and treats your child like his own, it’s almost heroic (again, it applies vice versa).
The video features three pairs of stepfathers and their children — now grown-ups — talking about the beginnings of their relationship: Victor and Mark, his dad for 19 years now; Randy and his stepdaughter of 16 years Chloe; and Paul and Shealyn, who’ve been family for 28 years already. Their first encounters were awkward, at best.
Shealyn described herself as a “fiery little brat” when she met her stepdad Paul 28 years ago.
Says Victor, “I didn’t really have like a close relationship with my actual dad, so when I met Mark, I said, ‘Oh! This is like what a Dad is!’”
Chloe was more defiant as a child. “Growing up, it was just my mom and I. I had this fantasy that my parents were gonna get back together. When my mom met Randy, I just remember my mom would try to get us to act like father and daughter. I was not having it. I don’t need this other person trying to come in and be my dad,” she narrated in the ad.
