Darren Criss made history at the 2025 Tony Awards, winning Best Actor in a Musical for his performance in the Broadway show, Maybe Happy Ending. The Asian-American actor played the role of Oliver, a disused early-model HelperBot, who seeks purpose and connection after his owner no longer has use for him. Maybe Happy Ending, which also won Best Musical, is a romantic comedy musical that follows two robots whose chance encounter sparks a connection, adventure, and love.

Darren Criss honors wife in Tony Awards speech

Darren, known for Glee and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, delivered a moving acceptance speech that honored people who helped him get to the stage, particularly his family. "A lot of humans got me here, so thank you, Mom," he said. He thanked his teachers and the team behind Maybe Happy Ending.

"Mia, you're the very pedestal that upholds the shiny, spinny bit in our lives, and your love and support for me and our beautiful children, combined with the miracle of working on something as magical as Maybe Happy Ending, has been and will always be award enough." —Darren Criss

The core of his speech centered on his wife, Mia Swier. "But the real hero in this remarkable journey is my wife Mia, who took a massive swing on allowing me to do this, and to allow this crazy upheaval in our life to make this logistically possible, and for bearing the brunt of raising two tiny friends under three so that I could raise a singing robot at the Belasco Theatre eight times a week."

Holding up his trophy, he continued, "Mia, you're the very pedestal that upholds the shiny, spinny bit in our lives, and your love and support for me and our beautiful children, combined with the miracle of working on something as magical as Maybe Happy Ending, has been and will always be award enough."

The couple shares two children, Bluesy Belle, 3, and Brother Laszlo, 1. They got married in 2019.

Towards the end, he dedicates his win to the memory of his father, Bill, and his brother, Chuck, whom he considers his best friends and greatest role models.
