Top 10 Newsmakers and Trends for Pinoy Moms in 2013

Another year is about to come to an end, and so we look back at the things that got us hooked and made noise in the last 12 months. These 10 top our list:  

10. Cro-nuts

In 2012, we had a cupcake frenzy; this year, we went crazy over the cro-nut.  Every resto-slash-bakery seems to have their own version of this croissant and doughnut hybrid, which came in all kinds of different flavors, from the classic chocolate and strawberry to the more adventurous bacon and glaze.  Baking classes that specialized on creating these goodies even popped up, allowing moms to make their own homemade versions.  While some simply pass this as an overrated, hyped-up piece of bread, the cro-nut definitely made noise among foodies this year.

9. Cookie Butter

Its fame spread (pun intended) like a juicy rumor among different circles of moms in the beginning, and in just a few weeks, cookie butter mania was all over social media sites, with everyone posting how this spread tastes good with anything and everything.  Very much like peanut butter in consistency, color and texture, the cookie butter spread is unique because of its distinct cookie taste. It now has different variations – you can have it smooth, crunchy, swirled with chocolate, etc.  Speculoos and Lotus Biscoff are the more popular ones in the market, but local establishments were quick to concoct their own versions of it as well. Others that are also beginning to rise in popularity are Fluff (marshmallow spread), Cadbury (chocolate spread) and Ovomaltine (from the energy drink).

8. The New Mompreneurs

Being a stay-at-home mom is no longer an excuse to be inactive and unproductive.  Many of them have turned to blogging, be it as an outlet for rants and raves or a space in the cyberworld to share their knowledge on parenting and homemaking. Taking it further, some mommy bloggers have reached their own level of celebrity status that they have branched out into writing their own books about parenting, cooking, or fashion, turning the blog into a profitable venture. With the latest beauty finds, organic baby products, travel recommendations and fashion trends, 2013 was definitely a busy year for the Filipino mompreneur.

7. Royal Baby-Watching

It’s a fairy tale coming alive right before our very eyes.  After their dreamy wedding, the Duke and and Duchess of Cambridge, also known as Prince William and Kate Middleton continued to live a life we swoon over when they presented their son,George Alexander Louis, to the world.  Many moms all over the world – the Philippines included -- were on the lookout not only for Kate’s mommy fashion style, but also her first moments with the new prince. Since it has been a long time since the Royal Family have had such revelry, 2013 definitely became even more special because of William, Kate, and George.

6. Helping Out

Different natural calamities have struck the Philippines this year, from the earthquake in Bohol which destroyed historical monuments and churches, to the super typhoon Yolanda (globally known as Haiyan) which destroyed an unimaginable scale of property and life like the world has never seen before. It’s almost impossible not to be affected by it. Thus, parents and their kids, out of their good hearts, quickly came to the rescue and found creative ways to help out the victims of the tragedies. Some have even gone as far as sacrificing Christmas celebrations and gifts, just to be able to help out in their own way.

5. Local Literacy

We’ve seen and heard the magic of Dr. Seuss’ and Eric Carle’s books through the years.  This year, however, local writers have been making waves in the publishing industry, more specifically in the field of children’s books, to the delight of Pinoy moms. Summit Books’ Dream Big series, for example, includes a collection of stories about iconic Filipino personalities which aim to inspire children to make a positive change in the world, among them: Nanay Coring (the story of Socorro Ramos, the woman behind National Bookstore’s success); Simply Jesse (the late DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo’s life story); Ninoy, Cory and Noynoy; Big John (business tycoon John Gokongwei’s success story), and, most recently, Princess Lea, which is the life story of world-renowned Filipina singer and actress LeaSalonga. Because they are our own, these children’s storybooks have truly become a part of many Pinoy households this year.

4. Family Marathons

Now, more than ever, moms have become more conscious and proactive about taking care of their health, as evident in how she is on a constant quest for activities that will keep her mind, body and spirit in balance. Workouts are no longer mom’s own “Me” time, however; it has evolved into a family activity this year, thus family runs and marathons have become a common weekend activity, making it more fun for families to become healthy together.

3. Detox

Getting fit is no longer just about exercises, either. This year, we became aware that cleansing from the inside – or purging your body of toxins -- is as important as physical activity in getting on that fitness track. Whether the goal is to lose weight, or simply to feel refreshed and clean inside, the new trend that moms caught on this year is juicing. Because it can be conveniently done at home, and with the endless recipe possibilities, juicing has made it easy for moms (and dads) to adapt a healthier lifestyle.

Aside from homemade juicing, juiced concoctions have also been made commercially available. Detoxify Bar, Spruce, Juju Cleanse and the Skinny Juicery are just some of the more popular brands of cleansing juices in the country now.

2. Kiddie OOTD

Children are not to be left behind when it comes to fashion, thanks to their fashion-savvy moms. Inspirations such as world-famous fashion blogger Alonso Mateo (who is only 5 years old yet wears kiddie couture from brands like Dior, Gucci and the like) have inspired moms to get their own kids into the fun world of fashion. Clothing brands have been creating chic, trendy collections specifically for children - certainly unheard of a few years back! Suelas, a local shoe brand that specializes on comfortable flats, now has its own line just for kids called Suelitas; The SM Store launched its baby line SM Babies, and so did international clothing brand Mango. A number of startup fashion lines for kids have also been mushrooming in social media sites. Indeed, there was no shortage of clothing options for kiddos this year!

1. Instagram Update

Last year, this phone app made us all photo-savvy, especially moms! Adorable photos of babies smiling or yawning flooded our timelines, eagerly posted by our mommy- and daddy-friends.

This year, Instagram took photo sharing a notch higher with the new video feature -- moms can now take videos of their children’s first steps or their child’s recital in school (never mind that it’s only a few seconds long) to showcase their kids’ milestones.  Recently, a private photo-sharing feature was also introduced.

This app, which has also allowed moms to ‘follow’ celebrities online for a peek into their lives, has also evolved into a marketing tool for enterprising moms. Indeed, Instagram has made our lives so much more fun, and sharing, a lot more convenient!
