    2. DOH denies dengue vaccine caused an 11-year-old's death
It was coincidental, according to Department of Health spokesperson Dr. Lynden Lee-Suy. "Congenital heart disease is not an exclusion criterion for vaccination," he said. DOH Secretary Janette Garin explained that the child's cause of death was due to amoebiasis that led to complications. In the mass immunization program, the dengue vaccine is given only to kids ten years old and older and with parents’ consent. The dengue vaccine is not allowed for kids age nine and younger, adults age 45 and above, or those who are pregnant, undergoing chemotherapy, HIV positive, and those with allergies to the active component of the vaccine. More than 2,000 student have been vaccinated against dengue and Garin said that the side effects noted by health workers are mostly minor. (abs-cbn.com)

    3. Sy family set to build a sports academy in Laguna
The family of one of the richest business tycoons in the country is expanding its advocacy in promoting sports education. The Sys of giant retail chain SM Supermalls are building a P1-billion world-class sports academy in Calamba, Laguna, which is set to open by 2018. "We felt that it is something we should go into because we want to support sports development and, at the same time, help older athletes," said Hans Sy, National University chair. The academy would start programs for popular sports like basketball, volleyball, and tennis, and will focus on two things: training and development of professional teams. "This is something that we believe can help the country not (only) in terms of sports development, it would be able to help put away drug issues (for the youth)," Sy added. The building, which will be built on a four-hectare property, is currently in the final design stages. (inquirer.net)
