2. "Sparks fly" when making a baby
A new study published in Nature Chemistry explained how sparks literally fly when a couple makes a baby: sparks result from thousands of sacs containing a million zinc atoms each exploding when sperm meets the egg. The sparks erupt the egg's surface, which is what helps transform an egg into an embryo. The study helped researchers at Northwestern University have a better understanding of how zinc variations affect egg development, which helps them select the best eggs for in vitro fertilization. 4. Pregnancy weight gain a baby-gender indicator?
According to a study published in PLOS One, the amount of pregnancy weight gained could possibly predict a baby's gender. The study, which analyzed data on more than 68 million births over 23 years, found that the less weight a woman gains during pregnancy, the less likely she is to have a boy. More pounds means more chances of having a boy. Researchers believe it's because male embryos and fetuses have higher metabolic rates that may require more nourishment. (nytimes.com)
5. Eating fast food may lead to lower grades
It's a known fact that fast food can have all sorts of negative effects on the human body, but it turns out that it can also affect a child's performance in school. A new study published in Clinical Pediatrics found that students who eat fast food every day had slower growth in academic achievement. The researchers recommend for families to lessen intake of fast food and not incorporate it into their daily routine. (huffingtonpost.com)ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
