  • It’s no secret that TV host Mariel Padilla is an advocate of healthy living. She exercises, watches what she eats, and has been practicing juicing for years using organic fruits and vegetables. It’s a lifestyle she continued to observe even when she eventually married actor Robin Padilla

In a new vlog entitled “A Dream Come True” on her YouTube channel, the pregnant Mariel revealed that in fact, she has not eaten pork for almost 10 years now, since she met Robin, who is a devout Muslim. Mariel says she decided to take things up a notch by making a New Year’s resolution this 2019 to avoid beef or chicken in her diet as well.

“I made a New Year’s resolution, January 2019, that I will no longer eat beef or chicken and I’m so proud to say that as of today, September 9, that I have not eaten chicken or beef,” she said. Doing so makes Mariel a pescatarian, or someone who “adheres to a diet where seafood is the only source of meat in an otherwise vegetarian diet,” according to Wikipedia

Pescatarians consume mostly fruits, vegetables, grains, fish, and other seafood. Pescatarians who are ovo-lacto vegetarians also incorporate eggs and other dairy products into their diet.

Mariel revealed in her vlog that her decision to go pescatarian was primarily because they are raising their 2-year-old daughter Maria Isabella to be a pescatarian, too.

“Robin wants Isabella to be a pescatarian. Actually vegetarian pa nga ‘yung gusto niya, sinabi ko lang na hindi naman pwedeng gano’n. So I said, kawawa naman ‘yung anak ko kung kunwari kumakain kami tapos biglang sasabihin niya sa ‘kin, ‘Mommy can I try this,’ tapos sasabihin ko sa kanya, ‘No, it’s only for Mommy.’ Kawawa naman siya masyado. So dinadamayan ko siya kaya hanggang ngayon, I still don’t eat it,” Mariel explained.

The 35-year-old mom has successfully stuck to her pescatarian diet for the last eight months (since January 2019). However, after her ob-gyn gave her an update on her unborn baby’s development, Mariel was quick to change gears.

“But two weeks already, my doctor told me that the growth of Maria Gabriella is not so big,” Mariel said, referring to the baby in her womb.

She added in her vlog a snippet of a conversation she had with Dr. Eileen Manalo during a routine check-up, in which the ob-gyn advised her to be on a high-protein diet.

“So do you think mahahabol ko pa siya?” Mariel asked her doctor, since she is only a few weeks away from giving birth. “Dapat. You have time,” she was told.

Lean meat, poultry, fish, and eggs, as well as milk, and cheese, are rich sources of dietary protein.

“Hindi niya maitanong, doktora, so kailangan niyang kumain ng meat?” Mariel’s husband Robin can be heard addressing the doctor in the background.

In reply, the doctor said, “Kailangan siyang kumain ngayon. Mag-steak ka.”

Thus, Mariel and Robin had an impromptu date that day and feasted on steak, just as the doctor ordered!

At the steak house, Mariel ordered Caesar salad (no pancetta/pork and no egg, because it’s raw), a bowl of lobster bisque soup, and a serving of Wagyu ribeye, well done. Robin had an 1824 grain-fed Queensland ribeye steak with a seared foie gras on top.

That she has to eat more meat and other protein-rich food for the remainder of her pregnancy is a good problem for Mariel, who intimated that she had been dreaming of this moment since January. The excited preggo said in her vlog, “Everyday ko pinapaginipan [sic] na kumakain ako ng meat. Ang hashtag natin for today, #dreamscometrue!”

As of this writing, Mariel still happily awaits the birth of her baby Maria Gabriella. She and Maria Isabella left for the United States on September 12 and have been enjoying the sights in Philadelphia.
