We often think of traveling abroad as a family, and while it's a great way to explore the world and its culture, starting our travel goals with local adventures can be equally rewarding.

Planning a family trip within our own country allows us to discover the multicultural beauty and diversity that exists closer to home. It provides us with a deeper connection to our cultural heritage and identity, and a chance to explore the vast history of our homeland. Recently, my family and I had a trip to Davao, and it was an exhilarating experience for our young children, aged two and five.

As someone who resides in Luzon, traveling to Mindanao gave me a whole new perspective on the people across our country, especially the Davaoeños.

1. Davaoeños embody the true attributes of Filipinos.

The people of Davao are known for being friendly, disciplined, welcoming, kind, and polite. I witnessed the true essence of "bayanihan" (community spirit) among the mommy group, Mommies of Panabo, whom I encountered on the first day of our trip when I attended a special event for moms. They welcomed me with warm smiles and spoke Tagalog so we could better understand each other. It felt as if they had known me for a long time, making me feel at home.

Even taxi drivers, street vendors, and guards at the night market made me feel safe and comfortable. They were the most hospitable people I have ever met.

2. They value good governance and respect authority.

Being someone whose point of view about politics is strongly influenced by literary and historical studies, I better understood why Davaoeños take pride in their leader. As we strolled through Roxas Night Market and People's Park, I noticed military personnel overseeing the events in the market. Instead of causing panic or fear, it felt like I was in a community where my family could stroll at night, feeling safe and sound.

When we dined at a restaurant, we noticed that there were no waiters cleaning the tables. However, there were no signs such as "Clean As You Go." Yet, the people were disciplined in cleaning and avoiding litter.

Davaoeños are proud of their government, and their adherence to rules and regulations made me see why Davao should serve as an example to the rest of the Philippines.

3. Davao has a relaxing atmosphere and a pleasant climate.

During my visit, I learned that Davao has not yet experienced typhoons due to its mountain ranges. It is the only location in the Philippines where temperature and weather are individually distributed. This unique geographical feature contributes to a tranquil environment, making Davao an ideal destination for a relaxing vacation.
