Japan Visa Delay: What You Need To Know
In case you haven't heard, since January 9 of this year, processing for Japan's tourist visas now takes weeks longer than the previous seven to ten working days. So, what's behind the delay? Japan's embassy in the Philippines has tightened visa slots for Filipino travelers due to a surge in visitors, partly driven by the weakened yen.
According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), the Philippines saw the highest growth in visitor numbers to Japan among Southeast Asian countries from 2023 to 2024. This spike includes all types of visitors, with the majority being tourists. In 2024, an estimated 818,700 Filipino travelers visited Japan, marking a 31.6% increase from the previous year and setting a record high for the second consecutive year.
With that, the embassy urged aspiring visitors to submit their applications at least two months before their intended travel date.
"Due to the rapid increase in the number of visitors from the Philippines, examination of visa applications for tourism purposes, may take several weeks longer than the standard processing time," the embassy's official website stated. "Therefore, we highly recommend for applicants to please apply at least two months prior to the date of travel."
What You Need to Know About Japan's New Tourist Visa Process
Does the longer processing time apply for all visa types?
Nope. This change applies only to tourist or short-stay visas (15 or 30 days). Business and official visas remain unaffected. The Japanese embassy in Manila recommends planning well in advance and submitting your application as soon as your travel dates are locked in.
How early should I apply?
At least two months before your trip. Yes, that's four times the old processing period. While the embassy aims to process applications within five working days, real-world conditions (like application volume) make this unpredictable. Hence, the two-month buffer.
Have the visa requirements changed?
Nope, the checklist remains the same; it's just the processing timeline that's been stretched. The Japan tourist visa requirements still include the following:
- Valid Philippine passport with two blank pages
- Accomplished Visa Application Form
- Passport Photo
- Original Birth Certificate
- Itinerary
- Bank Certificate
- Income Tax Return
- Employment Certificate
- Original Marriage Certificate (if applicable)
Has the embassy reduced slots for Filipino tourists?
Absolutely not. The number of available slots remains unchanged. Any rumors suggesting otherwise? The embassy firmly denies them.
Is this delay happening only in the Philippines?
Yes, among Asian countries. That's because the Philippines is the only Southeast Asian country (tracked by JNTO) whose citizens aren't visa-exempt for short stays. However, in Singapore, even though citizens are visa-exempt, the Japanese embassy advises applying two months in advance due to high volumes.
What if my travel agency won't accept my application?
Don't panic. Many agencies have paused walk-ins or capped daily submissions to manage the flood of applicants. Book an appointment online and ensure your documents are flawless to avoid delays.
Is my agency accredited by the Japanese embassy?
Before you hand over your documents, double-check if your agency is officially accredited. Only seven travel agencies are authorized to handle visa applications:
- Universal Holidays Inc.
- Discovery Tour Inc.
- Rajah Travel Corporation
- Reli Tours & Travel Agency
- Attic Tours Philippines Inc.
- Friendship Tours and Resorts Corporation
- Pan Pacific Travel Corporation (only for those who don't need documents/assistance in Japanese)
Can I expedite my Japan visa application?
Currently, there is no official expedited processing option for Japan tourist visas issued in the Philippines. Unlike some countries that offer rush or priority visa services, Japan's embassy processes applications on a first-come, first-served basis, following strict guidelines.
What if I need to travel urgently?
Tough luck. The embassy clearly states: "We cannot accommodate requests for early release of passports based on scheduled departure dates."
Japan's breathtaking sights are still within reach for your family, but they’ll require careful planning this time. With the extended visa processing times, we cannot stress this enough: it's important to apply early and double-check your documents to avoid any last-minute stress.
