It’s been used for centuries in many cultures around the world, including the Philippines, and recently became popular, thanks to the different kinds of carriers made available in the market.
But while babywearing is a helpful tool that will allow parents to move and carry their children handsfree, the practice has been hounded by safety issues, and parents have questioned how babywearing will affect baby’s growth and development. Jennelyn “Jen” Alegarbez is a mom of four and a babywearing consultant certified by the Center for Babywearing Studies in New York. Her interest in babywearing had started in 2014 when her third child was born, and she became a stay-at-home mom. It has led her to open an online store, Shadrach’s Collection, where she sells baby carriers like woven baby wraps and ring slings.
As a babywearing educator, Jen emphasizes safe babywearing at all times. “Hindi lang siya basta mo susuotin si baby. May tamang posisyon,” she tells SmartParenting.com.ph, “especially for babies below a year old, dahil nag-de-develop pa lang ang spine and hips nila.”
