  • The award-winning and critically-acclaimed HBO series is set to air their final season this April 2019. For eight long years, Game of Thrones has inspired many, from using it as a wedding theme to naming their baby's after the story's characters. Even Filipinos have actually named babies "Khaleesi" (we're not kidding!).

Whether you are a fan or not of the books or the show, it's hard not to hear about this epic tale that popular culture has fully embraced and one that will be remembered long after the series ends. That's the kind of global star power you're attaching to your baby's name if you choose a moniker popularized from Game Of Thrones.

Game of Thrones names are not meaningless. According to Closer"Arya" means noble while "Sansa" means praise or charm. "Daenerys," the mother of dragons, means born of the storm and alludes to strength. "Tyrion" refers to nobility while "Thoen" means godly. Some of the names' have been derived staple names such as "Peter" for "Petyr" and "Tristan" for "Trystane."

BBC reported in September 2018 that U.K. babies named after Game of Thrones characters have increased every year since the show first aired. Many baby girls were named after the show's strong women characters such as Khaleesi, Daenerys, Arya, and Sansa. For boys, the most popular Game of Thrones name for boys was "Tyrion," the character played by actor Peter Dinklage, and one of the show's smartest and most cunning characters.

Many also named their babies after the actors who played these iconic characters onscreen, such as Emilia Clark (Daenerys who is also known as Khaleesi), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) and Kit Harrington ( Jon Snow).

A word of caution, though, given the nature of the story lines on Game of Thrones: not all of them survive! It's up to you if you will make it a factor in deciding whether you will pick any of the beautiful names below. Their last names or the house they belong to are in parenthesis, which can stand alone as baby names too!
