  • Just the sight of a newborn is enough to make anyone coo and squeal in delight — before you know it, guests will be walking over to your baby and touching their tiny little hands. They might even want to plant a kiss on her soft cheeks. Babies are just so irresistible!

But mom, if you feel uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to ask them to refrain from touching your baby. In fact, you should also ask them to avoid kissing your baby at all costs. You’re not being snobby — it pays to be cautious.

Babies, especially newborns, are fragile. Adults can easily pass on viruses and illnesses, which can cause serious harm to babies. A newborn’s immune system is still immature, and virus and bacteria that cause mild illness in older children can be devastating to them.

One mom shared the story of her newborn who sadly passed away after contracting a strain of the herpes virus from an infected visitor’s kiss. The virus caused meningitis, an inflammation of the tissue that covers the brain and spinal cord. Unfortunately, a majority of adults who are infected with herpes do not know they have it as the infection shows no symptoms. When babies get infected with the virus, it can be very severe and cause death.

With stories like this, it’s perfectly understandable if you would want visitors to have minimum contact with your newborn. But with Filipinos, it can be very difficult to make others, especially relatives, understand why they can’t cuddle and kiss your baby.
