Good names never grow old. For Filipino parents, names from the Bible are always a great pick. According to the Philippine Information Agency, the Philippine Statistics Authority already has a list for the most common baby names so far. Provided by statistical analyst Joselyn Madrigallos, here are the most popular baby names in 2014 and 2015!

Gabriel takes the top spot for most common baby name in 2014 with close to 3,500 children being named for the well-known archangel. Looking at the numbers by gender, Angel was the top pick for baby girls with 3,366 named for the same year.

Religious figures are a constant source of inspiration for Filipino parents. In 2015, Nathaniel took top spot with 6,482 babies. The name's success may be largely credited to the popularity of a local TV show where the central character is an angel with the name (remember?). Francis was also a popular name in 2015 -- this was the year His Holiness visited the country.
For girls, Angel was again most popular with 2,157. Sophia and Sofia also saw increased popularity, thanks to the Disney cartoon, Sofia the First.
A testament to the Filipinos love and enjoyment of the Miss Universe pageant, 925 children were named after Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach. Miss Universe candidate Charlene Gonzalez was also near and dear to the Filipino people with 4,178 named after her in 1994. The crowned beauty queen was Sushmita Sen of India who was pleasantly surprised to learn that many Filipino baby girls were named after her that year. (See her adorable reaction here!)
The most popular Miss Universe name, however, is Gloria after Gloria Diaz who was the first Filipina to ever win the coveted title. After she won Miss Philippines in 1968, 3,100 children were named after her, and 3,413 more when she won the Miss Universe crown.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW

While we wait for 2016 data to arrive, the SmartParenting.com.ph team thought it would be fun to make our own predictions. Because the Miss Universe 2016 pageant was held in the Philippines, we predict a fair number of babies were named after Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina or even after Miss Universe 2016 winner, Iris Mittenaere.
Scarlet would also most likely be a contender basing on the popularity of little cutie Scarlet Snow, daughter of Dr. Vicki Belo and Dr. Hayden Kho. Following that, James might make an appearance on the top list a third year in a row, not only for its biblical origins, but also the popularity of celebrity actor James Reid.
