  • A little girl from New York who attended the birth of her brother was able to step in and provide the vital skin-to-skin contact he needed. It was their first step in securing a bond between the two that will hopefully last a lifetime.

Birth photographer and doula Nicole Lahey shared a photo of a girl, named Hunter, to Love What Matters on January 8, 2018. She wrote that Hunter was present during the birth of her baby brother; she had been well-prepared ahead of the momentous occasion and knew what to expect. She even “cheered her mom on as she pushed him out,” and “she rubbed her mother’s hair so gently.”

After the birth of her baby brother, Hunter took the opportunity to hold him for the first time. Lahey asked if she wanted to take her shirt off and hold her baby brother. Without hesitation, Hunter was taking off her shirt, but also, she asked why she needed to do do. The photographer explained, “Brand new babies love the feeling of your skin, and you will love it, too.”

Lahey was able to capture the moment Hunter gave her brother the skin-to-skin contact, normally performed by the parents after birth.

“She was in heaven and didn’t want to give him back to his mom. She held him with the biggest smile as he bobbed his head around, looking for a breast. She giggled, as we told her he wanted to nurse,” Lahey said of the special sibling moment.

“Birth is the most normal part of life; share it with your children and teach them from the beginning, that birth is nothing to fear. Birth is strength,” the doula added.

The image was originally shared by Lahey on her Instagram page on August 22, 2017, and went viral after being shared with the Love What Matters Facebook page on January 8.
