13 Reasons To Home School Your Big Kid

My daughter started home schooling when she was seven years old, she was at level 2 at the time. However, before I made this choice, I heard a lot of things about home schooling. Most of them were about the disadvantages. Below are some facts that helped me make my decision to home school my big kid.

1.  It’s cheaper. No uniforms, no bus services fee and less school supplies… I mean much less school supplies. My daughter only needs pencils, crayons and sometimes colored paper or cartolina for her projects and experiments but mostly we use recycled items or scrap paper found at home.

2. There is less stress on both the student and the parent (the one who looks after the student at home). Though we have allotted time to study, there’s no stress on absorbing every lesson at one time. She doesn’t have to wait for others to finish their work or she doesn’t have to cram or to catch up with others just to move on to other lessons. The PACES (Parent and Child Educational Services) were also designed for your big kid to understand the lessons easily.

3. The home school educational system adheres to individualization to meet specific learning needs and capabilities. It also incorporates character building and wisdom principles.

4. No frustrations. Do you know that being the lowest in class even if it’s not a failing grade frustrates our kids? Or even having too many mistakes in a quiz frustrates them? At my big kid’s school, there are certain rules in correcting mistakes and scoring such that she doesn’t need to get frustrated.

5. Kids learn to work well independently. My daughter works with minimum supervision and takes the initiative to find solutions to problems and analyze examples to learn new procedures on her own.

6. Kids learn to set their own goals and achieve them.

7. Very motivating. My daughter has a progress chart in which she can put her stars. I also add a 6-section coloring chart with a picture of what she would like to have after 6 PACES. In addition to motivating her to finish her own goals, I also make certain rules for merits and demerits.

8. More time to bond with family and to mingle with friends. We have time to play, watch TV together, or bake especially if she finishes her goals earlier than expected. She also has plenty of time to visit her great grandparents and even play with her cousins and friends.

9. More time for socialization. We go out for a walk and stay at the playground and make new friends.

10. More time to improve your kid’s talents and skills. Since home schooling is cheaper, I have enough money to enroll her in Taekwondo class and voice classes. She has the choice to take up lessons on whatever talent or skill she wants to focus on. 

11. Accelerated learning. Since the school curriculum is individualized, it frees our kids to advance through the scope and sequenced material at their own rate. As the built-in motivational tools are applied, most students not only finish a year’s worth of work, they are able to advance to the next level of material within the same school year. However, parents are advised to observe their kids’ rate of learning and age so they could cope emotionally if ever they decide to study in a regular school.

12. Mastery-based. The self-instructional materials come complete with their own methodology and procedures designed to help our kids master each concept in their studies.

13. Bible-based and Character Building. Since that my daughter was enrolled in an Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) school, their system seeks to prepare kids for life with a vision of making them future leaders of our nation. Character building principles are integrated in every academic subject in all levels of the curriculum. With Jesus Christ as the model, sixty identifiable character traits are defined and explained through Scripture verses, stories, and illustrations. The student is exposed to all 60 character traits at every level of the curriculum, which are further emphasized as character-based awards form part of the school’s incentive system. I believe that my daughter will be able to benefit from these traits because not only does she study or learn about them but she also practices them as she progresses with her academic work.  

 

I thank God that He showed me the way to this school (School of Tomorrow, Philippines) because not only did the school help me and my daughter be closer to each other but it also helped us be closer to God.

It’s been two years and my daughter is now at level 5. I can say that I made the right decision because I see the results in my daughter’s attitude and the way she views her life. The bond that we share as mother and daughter and as supervisor and student is the bond that I’ll never regret in life.
