Taguig, located in the southeastern portion of Metro Manila, sits along the scenic northwestern shore of Laguna de Bay, near the Pasig River’s Napindan Channel. The city is bordered by Pateros and Pasig to the north, Rizal’s Taytay and Laguna Lake to the east, Laguna Lake and Muntinlupa to the south, and the cities of Parañaque, Makati, and Pasay to the west–all within Metro Manila.
Think Big Taguig: Taguig in a nutshell
Taguig originated as an ancient settlement that thrived on the abundant resources provided by the largest lake in the Philippines, Laguna de Bay.
Legend has it, since the original settlers of the area were skilled in threshing rice after the harvest, such ability earned them the name "mga taga-giik," which means "the rice threshers." Their settlement was known as "pook ng mga taga-giik." However, the Spanish colonizers found "taga-giik" difficult to pronounce, rendering it as "tagui-ig." After several mispronunciations and alterations, the name is thought to have evolved into the present-day name, "Taguig."
According to its city government’s official website, Taguig originated as a settlement under the Kingdom of Tondo, with an initial population of approximately 800 farmers and fishermen, believed to have included a mix of Chinese settlers. In 1587, the settlement known as Taguig was officially declared a pueblo, or a town, under the province of Manila. At the time, it was composed of nine distinct barrios.
In 1908, Taguig, along with Pateros, was declared an independent municipality. By 1918, Taguig and Pateros were separated, each becoming autonomous municipalities within the province of Rizal. In 1975, Taguig was incorporated into the National Capital Region through Presidential Decree No. 824.
Later, in 1998, Republic Act No. 8487 officially converted the Municipality of Taguig into a Highly Urbanized City.
Fast forward to 2022, the Supreme Court upheld Taguig's jurisdiction over Bonifacio Global City (BGC) and 10 additional barangays within the Enlisted Men's Barrios (EMBO) area. These barangays are Cembo, Comembo, East Rembo, Pembo, Pitogo, Rizal, South Cembo and West Rembo, as well as the two Inner Fort barangays: Post Proper Northside and Post Proper Southside.
