5 Practical Ways To Help Your Kids To Actually Thrive In School

Academic success is achievable!

Children face many challenges in school every day, and as parents, you want your kids to enjoy their classes and actually thrive in them. What you need to know is that you play a key role in their learning and development, and, sure enough, there are many ways to support your children with their schooling.

Here are 5 practical and effective ways to help your kids excel in school:

1. Build a good foundation for learning

You are your children’s first teacher, so all of the important lessons you teach them are the building blocks of how they will learn at school. Introducing them to basic skills like communication, personal hygiene, good manners, and more will help advance their social development and ability to learn more complex skills and topics as they go through their schooling.

Teaching your kids how to study also helps them pick up good learning habits. Provide them with study tools or teach techniques that help them digest lessons in a more effective way. Some examples include breaking down big goals into manageable tasks, creating a schedule for homework and other school activities, introducing them to mnemonic devices for information recall, etc.

2. Establish good sleeping habits

Never minimize the effects of a good night’s rest on your children’s productivity at school. It actually improves their energy level, focus, and overall performance.

With your guidance, allow your kids to create a nighttime routine that they'll enjoy and commit to. You and your kids can also establish cues to indicate sleep time, such as bedtime stories or bedtime prayers. In addition, avoid screen time at least 30 minutes before bedtime to promote proper sleep. You want your kids to have a cool, comfortable, quiet, and dark environment to lull them to quality sleep, energizing them for the next day.

3. Prepare a nutritious breakfast

Similar to sleep, a balanced, nutritious morning meal is also essential. Think about it, your kids spend most of their day absorbing information, taking tests or quizzes, and participating in school activities, and all of these require a great deal of energy.

So, make sure they eat a breakfast that's rich in whole grains, fiber, and protein but low in added sugar. This way, your children are ready and energized for all of the challenges inside the classroom. Don’t forget to pack snacks and meals for recess and lunchtime, too! Choose yummy but nutritious ones like fresh fruit, nuts, or a banana sandwich that can help replenish their energy.

4. Talk to your children about their studies and listen to them

Remember, moms and dads, each kid is different. Learning methods that work for other children may not work for your kids, and that’s okay. The best way to support your children is by communicating with them and actively listening to what they need. Your kids want to feel heard and understood, so be present and involved. Work with your children and discover what method is best for them.

Many kids also find it important to see their parents take an interest in their education. So, make an effort to get to know more about their school activities and participate as much as possible. Of course, be sure to follow your child’s cues to discover just how much interaction is comfortable for both of you.

5. Enroll them in trusted after-school programs
