Where do babies come from? 3 Moms’ Funny Stories on Dealing with this Question

1. Tactic: Delay it
One time, my daughters Abby and Marion saw cute babies on TV. I overheard their conversation:

Marion: Where do babies come from? Paano nagkakaroon ng baby?
Abby: They come from mommies’ tummies.
Marion: How come it was formed inside the tummy?
Abby: I don’t know! Basta my school teacher said that babies are formed through the cells coming from mommy and daddy.
Marion: What are cells?
Abby: (Faltering) Um, er, I don’t know. I remember teacher telling us that it is something that goes out from the body.
Marion: (Thinking) Ha, talaga like saliva, urine or poo?

They were both laughing out loud and then they saw me and called me. Kunyari deadma ako sa pinag uusapan nila:

Abby: Nanay! Can you please explain to her?
Me: Ate is right, babies come from cells. When you grow up you’ll know.
Marion: Why would I wait for me to grow up? I need to know now!
Me: Later na lang, please! (Ang hirap kaya mag-explain! Haha!)

2. Better To Come From You
My daughter was age 5 or 6 when I told her that babies come when a man and woman have sex. I did not however, at that time, go into what sex is technically. She didn’t ask, so I know she wasn’t ready.

I am not going to lie and say you have to be married or even in love. I choose to be honest with her because I want her to come to me for information. If I gloss over or make up ph nd out eventually, and I may miss out on her confiding to me later. Plus, I can use it as an opportunity to pass onto her our values as a family. It is uncomfortable to talk about but I want to give her accurate information. Who knows what she could learn elsewhere?

3. Thankful Mom
