Dianne Medina was shocked by how much tuition fees have increased since her own time in school.
On her Instagram stories, the actress and mother of two shared a photo of items she uncovered while cleaning their old house. The photo included old school receipts and report cards from Holy Spirit School and Ateneo de Manila Grade School, presumably belonging to Dianne and of her relatives. Dianne wrote:
“Grabe young tuition fee ko may receipt na dated May 7, 1991, Kinder, Holy Spirit QC - 2,521.50 pesos lang.
“Fast forward now 170K si Joaquin Nursery 2 grabe hahaha.”
Dianne and her husband, actor Rodjun Cruz, welcomed their first child, Joaquin, in 2019. Dianne gave birth to their second child, a daughter named Maria Isabella Elizabeth, in July 2024.
The cost of schooling
Dianne is not alone in her shock over the price of private schooling. These days, progressive preschools can cost anywhere from P50,000 to as much as P200,000 per year, with Montessori preschools not that far behind, costing between P40,000 to P110,000 per year.
In fact, a group of financial consultants called Save, Invest then Harvest projected how much a college education could cost in about 15 years, factoring annual tuition fee hikes and inflation rates.
The group projected that by 2034, the total tuition for a four-year course at these universities could be:
- University of Santo Tomas (UST): P1,001,000
- Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU): P2,208,000
- De La Salle University (DLSU): P1,972,000
- Mapua University: P1,240,000
- San Sebastian College-Recoletos (SSC-R): P2,580,000
- Silliman University: P995,000
- San Beda College: P1,294,000
What do you think about the current rate of tuition fees? What was your tuition fee when you were a student?
