  • We’re all too familiar with this scenario — kids tag along for grocery shopping and the moment you secure a shopping cart, your toddler begs and pleads, “Mommy, can I ride the cart, please oh please!” And you or hubby end up carrying your excited kid so he can get in the cart. Then, a few minutes later, he gets restless and you have to carry him out of the cart. The cycle goes on and when you get home, you find yourself with a painful back from all that lifting.

Well, moms and dads, it turns out there’s an easier way to get your kids inside the cart and we have to admit, we’re pretty embarrassed for not thinking of it sooner.

Laura Castrillo, mom of three, learned this hack years ago, but she was surprised that her own mom didn’t know it. So, she decided to take a video and share it with the world via Facebook.

It’s an obvious hack but one that makes you go, “Why didn’t I think of that?” You see, there’s no need to carry your kids onto the cart — just lift the panel of your shopping cart and let your children crawl inside! Yes, it’s the same panel that gets pushed back when the shopping carts are lined up.

Crazy, right? According to Laura, she decided to upload the video after she found out her mom, who often took her kids out on errands and shopping trips, had been suffering from backaches from getting her kids in and out of the shopping cart. “After one of those trips, my mom told me her back was sore from all the lifting in and out. That’s when I shared the trick with her,” she tells LoveWhatMatters.com.

Laura adds that she first learned the trick from her stepmom. Her stepmom had used it as an easy way to get her stepbrother, who had a disability, inside the cart when he was younger. “I’ve been doing it with my own kids for about two years now, and it has made shopping with them a lot easier,” she shares.

As of this writing, Laura’s video has been viewed 4.4 million times, shared more than 59,000 times, and has over 6,300 comments and over 5,000 reactions. And yes, most of the comments were along the lines of, “Who would have thought?!” Obviously, so few of us knew of this trick.

And before you become a party pooper and say, “Kids are not supposed to be in the cart,” know that this trick is pretty helpful for every parent out there who have their hands full trying to handle a restless child but who still need to get the grocery done.

“While it may seem silly, the comments I’ve seen from parents who hadn’t known about this little trick have really been great,” says Laura. “Moms with special-needs children who are heavy but need to be in the cart, moms who are in the final stages of pregnancy and have toddlers that can’t be left to walk around in the store, and grandparents like my mom who are disabled but love spending time with grandkids in any way that they can.”

We know that most moms would prefer doing the grocery by themselves — there are no distractions and you can stick to your budget, plus, being away from the kids can almost feel like a mini-vacation! But if you prefer taking your kids with you, then this can be a real lifesaver.

Was this the first time you heard of this trick or were you already a genius momma like Laura? Tell us in the comments!
