Dear Parent,
In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to forget to savor the precious time we have with our families. But these moments, whether they’re small, mundane occurrences or grand celebrations, are what truly give life meaning.
When was the last time that you and your family enjoyed a sumptuous meal and laughed over dad jokes? Or are we all glued now to our phones as we eat, hardly ever lifting our heads nor looking each other in the eye? That smart little gadget seems to have replaced it all—alarm clock, maps, TV, flashlight, video recorder, camera, shopping, banking, and many more. Are we bound to replace family bonding and meaningful conversations with it, too? How many of us have equated presence with “being present”? These are two entirely different things.
Family time isn’t just about sharing food or spending time together; it’s a lot deeper than that. Family time is about creating memories, deepening bonds, creating anchors of security for our children, and finding joy in each other’s company. Whether it’s a simple dinner, a shared hobby, a camping or hiking experience, or maybe an impromptu game night, or a diner pretend play, these moments become the stories we tell and the experiences we hold dear. We only get the chance to raise our kids once—there’s no pause or rewind button—and in the midst of our packed schedule, we tend to postpone connecting with them because we know that they’re just there, and tomorrow we’ll be with them again.
But we don’t know that. We forget that tomorrow is not promised.
Dear parent, we want our homes to be the first thing that our children come home to when they get into trouble, break their hearts, and experience their first failure—and not the other way around. Let’s be reminded that our families should be the ones who would lift us up, celebrate our triumphs, and stand by us through life’s challenges. Take time to create a safe space for our family that no one would hesitate to come running home when the going gets hard.
So put the phone down, listen to that story your child has been wanting to tell you but you’re too busy to do so. Pick that toy pan and create imaginary dishes with your child. Rub their back, caress their hair, smother them with kisses, and blow bubbles with them during bath time. Travel, take photos, and bask in the sun. Let’s take a moment to be present, to appreciate the laughter, the lessons, even the mess and the chaos. Indulge in the fact that each moment is never going to come back and everything we did, and even us their parents, will simply become a distant memory.
Every laugh shared, every conversation, and every small act of kindness towards our family is a reminder of the love and support we’re fortunate to have. Even in the quiet, ordinary moments, there's magic in simply being together, if only you take time to see the beauty of it. Life moves quickly, but these family moments are the ones we’ll cherish forever and carry in our hearts.
