It is never easy for ex-couples to explain to their kids why their parents are no longer together, but this is no reason to hide the truth from them. Children may initially find it confusing and hurtful, but depriving them this knowledge might be more devastating to them in the long run.
In the case of actor Dennis Trillo, he believes that being honest to his son Calix, 9, about the status of his parents' relationship was the first step for the child to understand and eventually accept their situation.
Early on, the actor and his ex-girlfriend Carlene Aguilar, or Carla, former actress and beauty queen, told their son that his parents have separate lives.
Calix seems to understand his parents’ situation, according to Dennis. While Calix stays with Carla, Dennis spends time with him on weekends and on summer vacations.
Honest with his lovelife Dennis continued that he is also honest to his son about his love life. The actor is currently in a relationship with actress Jennylyn Mercado, who is a single mom. Calix is curious about everything. He sometimes asks his dad about his relationship, which Dennis answers with honesty.

“’Yung age na iyon curious siya. Marami siya gusto malaman, so tinatanong niya para malaman niya ang sagot,” the actor related.
Does the kid approve of Jennylyn for his dad?
“Oo, kasi nakikita niya happy naman ako,” replied Dennis. On the other hand, Carla has been married to a non-showbiz guy since 2009, with whom she has two sons.
Dennis is also thankful that Calix thinks way beyond his age. “Buti na lang di siya gano’n,” said Dennis, referring to children who have a hard time dealing with having separated parents.
