‘Small Wins Matter’: How Mompreneurs Successfully Juggle Business and Family

In today’s world of express deliveries, almost anything can be delivered directly to your doorstep–documents, food, clothes, medical supplies, and other essentials arrive instantly. Gone are the days when people had to go out of their way to drop off a parcel at a deliveryhub. Now, most delivery services offer door-to-door pick-up, making life much more convenient and time-saving. 

This shift has created opportunities for small-to-medium business owners, especially parents who balance their business with raising children. Mompreneurs, in particular, now have the flexibility to earn a living while staying at home. Even those with full-time jobs plus a business can save valuable time thanks to reliable delivery services. 

We asked mompreneurs from the Smart Parenting Village, an online community of over 110,000 parents, about how they manage their businesses.

Surplus Shop

Razel Blanco-Madrigal shared to Smart Parenting, “I have a Carousel account, and I use Flash Express kasi mas accessible sa area namin (Batangas). Usually, taga-Manila ang mga buyer ko.”

Razel started her buy-and-sell business back in 2006 when she was still an employee. “Pag may extra income ako noon, nagpupunta ako sa mga surplus shop kasi gusto ko yung quality ng Japanese items. Buy-and-sell ang ginawa ko. Nung nagkapera, nagtayo na ako ng sarili kong surplus shop, Japan and UK items. Nung nag-pandemic, lumipat kami from Makati to Batangas.”

Now, Razel juggles raising five children, managing an egg farm, and running both a physical and online surplus shop. When asked how she manages it all, she simply said, “Ewan ko, diskarte na lang talaga siguro.”

She emphasized how a reliable delivery service supports her business: “Napakalaki ng part ni Flash Express sa business ko, kasi kahit remote area napapasok nila. Hindi lang Metro Manila ang destination ng mga customers ko, pero nakakarating pa rin."

Razel’s business is based in Calatagan, Batangas, while most of her customers are in Metro Manila and other locations across the country. May mga repeat customers din ako,” she said.

She added, “Ang maganda sa kanila, pag ship today, tomorrow, received na ni customer. (Batangas to Manila). Kinaibigan ko yung rider sa area namin, kasi parcel pick-up ang service na pinili ko.”

Based on her years of experience with Flash Express, she said that there were notable improvements, “Improved na yung app nila. 2 years ago, walang access sa booking ang naka-iOS pero now, okay na.”

With her surplus items ranging from toys and school supplies to ceramics, Razel is pleased that she hasn’t encountered any broken items, “Sa mga fragile naman na items, so far wala namang nababasag. Careful naman sila at secured. Binabalot ko sa bubble wrap and box para secured, nilalagyan ko din ng ‘fragile’ tape.”

Razel is a mompreneur who manages her egg farm and surplus shop while raising five children, in Calatagan, Batangas. “Sinisipagan ko talaga para sa mga anak ko, may college ako, isang senior high school (ausome kid), isang grade 10, grade 4, at kinder. Lahat ng anak ko, top student, consistent sila simula elementary, kaya pinagmamalaki ko talaga.”

Breastfeeding Essentials

Jilianne Roylence Ramilo-Francia, owner of Valianne’s Trends, shared her experience with Smart Parenting: “Yung pick up, okay naman, mabilis delivery, especially in Metro Manila.” 

Valianne’s Trends is an online store offering stylish nursing shirts, dresses, underwear, lactation products, and baby and kids’ food. What started as a side hustle for a mom has become a highly sought-after store for breastfeeding essentials. 

In a previous Smart Parenting article, Jilianne offered advice to fellow mompreneurs: “There is no such thing as ‘one time, big time,’ but there is such a thing as ‘one small win at a time’ or ‘a good habit mastered at a time.’ It takes conscious effort to be truly successful in your chosen field. You have to wake up with a strong desire and pursuit for your passion because your whole family and other families who might someday rely on your business would be your driving force on why you do what you do."

Jilianne started Valianne’s Trends in 2017 with just P3,000 in capital. Today, she employs other moms as dressmakers, staff, and resellers. They frequently participate in baby and mom fairs around Metro Manila.
