Kids seem to have an endless supply of energy that powers them throughout a day of learning and play.
Take, for example, the children of Janice Pomaloy, Christine Larracoechea, and Jacquelyn Oro, who often do multiple activities in a day.
Janice's eldest is 7 and is into painting and playing basketball. She shares, "Lagi niya dala ang ball niya and painting materials. Sinisingit niya ang mga ito during his breaks. PE day is every Wednesday in school. Pag-uwi from school after kumain, matutulog na 'yan at ang gising na ay kinabukasan."
Still, her son can help with the chores at home, such as mopping the floor and even caring for his baby sibling.
Christine and her husband are parents who work from home, so they get to spend a lot of time with their two children, a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old. "My kids are very energetic on normal days. They go to school, study, and at home, we bond over reading stories, watching videos, singing, and dancing."
Meanwhile, Jacquelyn describes her 9-year-old daughter as "so makulit and totally active." She shares, "Her hobbies include singing a lot, especially [songs from] Frozen. At home, she enjoys doing house chores, which is not unusual with kids her age. She helps in cleaning, doing the laundry, and washing the dishes."
But children can feel sluggish and drained, too, especially after hours of studying, doing their school projects and homework, and playing with their friends.
So to help their kids keep up with their boundless energy, these moms do these four things to help keep them alert and energetic throughout the day.
1. Have meals on time.
"If a kid missed or skipped a meal for an hour or two, he or she becomes grumpy. Sometimes, they would [also] feel some pain in their tummy or head,” Christine observes.
So make sure children eat on time. If possible, make homecooked meals to ensure they’re being served food with just the right amount of fat, salt, and calories.
Don’t forget to make time to eat with the whole family, too. A study found that children who eat regularly with their family eat healthier, are more physically fit, and show improved academic performance.
2. Prioritize rest.
Janice says that since her son’s birth until the present, “We make sure [our son] follows his bedtime routine. Usually, he will be home at 12 noon from school and will take a nap at 1 p.m."
Likewise, Jacquelyn makes sure her daughter "takes naps during school to rest her body and mind."
3. Limit screen time.
Aside from making sure her son eats and sleeps on time, Janice also limits his screen time.
"Nakaka-drain din kasi kung hahayaan natin sila na maghapon manood ng TV and mag-gadget," she explains.
Additionally, a study found that the use of media devices right before bedtime–say, to watch a show or movie or to play games–also reduces the quality of sleep and may cause physical and mental health issues later on.
4. Eat healthily.
Christine believes that children’s "food intake should contain proper vitamins and minerals needed by their body for growth and development."
Remember: "Out of sight, out of mind." Replace junk food with healthy snacks and drinks that kids can readily munch on.
“Encourage kids to eat more fruits and vegetables as it's sometimes a struggle to make [them] eat healthy regularly. It should be a balanced diet with food that gives energy, like food rich in protein and the right amount of carbohydrates, too,” she adds.
Snacks Christine gives her children include fruits, cookies, bread, and a nutritious and energy-giving drink, like Dutch Mill.
