The Mompreneur: Marilou Coronado (mother to EJ, 7 years old)
Her Business: Salun-at Wellness Garden
The Idea: Before we put up our business, my husband Ernani and I were employees but praying for a good business. The health and wellness business was making a name for itself and becoming a trend during that time. On top of that, my daughter, EJ, was very sickly, almost every month. Of course, as parents, we were very worried about her health. We wanted to know how to give her holistic healing, and not depend on medications alone. So I could say these were a few reasons that drove me, with the help of my husband, to venture into this kind of business.
The Beginning: It seemed like everything just fell into place at the right time. We believe the business was really orchestrated by God. Salun-at Wellness Garden started with a small space, of about 17 square meters, in June 20, 2006. Salun-at, in Ilocano, means ‘good health’. The first year was really a humble beginning. Though clients were flocking in, we were still beset by difficult times. We had problems in capitalization which we needed to improve our business and serve our clients better. But through prayers, a continued evaluation process, and trial and error in managing the business, we finally overcame our initial problems.
Why It’s Unique: As far as we know, we are the sole provider of Kiddie Aromatherapy in La Union. We also offer massages to pregnant women, but only upon the advice of their doctors. Apart from this, our staff are registered ‘nurse-therapists’ by profession—aside from being nurses, they have been trained to work as massage therapists. In the very near future, we’ll also be serving healthy beverages to support our overall wellness program.

On Balancing Work And Family Time: This business is what I call a couple-tandem. Though I handle the marketing side, my hubby, who is a TESDA-certified trainer of massage therapy skills, takes care of the quality of service. It has always been a dynamic duo, so because of that, balancing my work here and family time is a whole lot easier. The business is also our second home, since we’re here most of the time. Work is very much considered part of our family time.
Why She Loves Being A Mom: My daughter EJ is my ultimate joy, my therapy, and my de-stressor. She keeps me sane despite all my pressures and problems. Mothering is what I enjoy most. I believe that some moms are destined for business, others are destined for employment, and others are for full-time motherhood. But I could say that in my case, I’m destined for full-time motherhood and entrepreneurship at the same time.
Advice For Aspiring Mompreneurs: Love and enjoy what you do. Don’t be pressured too much. Remind yourself that you are a living legacy to your children and even to the next generation as well. So look at the happy side of being a momprenuer and live one day at a time.
