On Earth Day, we asked parents in the Smart Parenting Village how they teach their children to save the planet. Moms were proud to share the photos of their little ones doing their part in keeping the Earth clean and healthy.
Let these kids remind you that we can all do something, in our own little ways, that can have a huge impact to our environment.
How parents are teaching their kids to save the Earth
1. Shift to cloth diapers
Mommy Ikay Baguio is proud to share that they are celebrating their second year in cloth diapering. She says, her daughter loves to wear cloth diapers, and she even has her favorites. "We've explained well how our CD-ing journey affects the environment. Now, she's pooping in her own toilet. Once a day nalang rin kami mag-diaper."
2. Use erasable boards to save paper
"Erasable boards for drawing and writing exercises instead of papers," shared Mommy Chloe Manalo, who posted photo of her daughter writing on a magic slate.
3. Expose them to nature
For Mommy Julikita Rigor Olvido, awareness about the environment starts when you expose them to nature. "Nature trips for the fam. Introducing my daughter to the mountains, rivers, forests, cold springs and animals. Letting her appreciate the outdoors."
4. Teach planting.
Mommy Rj Merin-Andoy shared a hack on how she taught her child to love plants. "I bought my daughter her own sprinkler for the plants so we can water them together." She adds, "She also has her fave slogan to help save mother earth: Reuse Reduce Recycle."
Mommy Chloe Manalo's kid loves planting too!
5. Reuse materials in activities
Mommy Yana Alvarez Manalansan shared a cute photo of her son, wearing a pandan basket! She said this way, she teaches her son how to recycle at such a young age. "By repurposing recyclable materials into his activities. Take note, fave din niyang gawing hat ung pandan basket na lalagyanan ng grooming set nya!"
Mommy Margarita Mercado also does this, "Milk cartons and old calling cards are used for flash cards. Old calendars' "clean sides" are used as drawing/painting sheets." She adds, "Dispose trash properly. Save water and electricity. Don't waste food."
6. Teach them the value of recycling
Mommy Hanna Fernando-Pacua said, "We compost food waste and segregate at home! I talk to them about the importance of reducing our waste. We reuse what we can, then sinasama ko ang kids dalhin ang recyclables sa recycling center or My Basurero para makita din nila kung ano ang mga solutions na available."
7. Be a model
For Mommy Melody Clarin, she was surprised to see that her child already knows and recognizes her efforts to recycle. "I don't tell them directly na ung mga ginagawa ko ay para to protect the environment kasi feeling ko they are still young para maintindihan yun. Pero one day bumili kami sa talipapa to buy embotido kaya di na ako ngdala ng eco-bag dahil pwede naman siya i-handcarry.'
She says, her son, who was 4 years old that time, told her, "Mama, na-forget mo yung lagayan mo ng food! (referring sa eco-bag). I was shocked kasi malaki na pla impact sa kanila ng mga ginagawa ko."
