  • Have you wondered why some toddlers prefer to be naked? We’ve tackled how to deal with tots who make it a struggle to dress up. But what can you do about kids who take off their clothes, even their diaper sometimes?

One mom from the Smart Parenting Village Facebook Group was concerned about her two-year-old daughter wanting to be in her birthday suit. She was sure it’s “nothing malicious,” but when asked why, her little girl didn’t give any explanation.

It’s normal for parents, especially first-time moms and dads, to sometimes wonder (and worry) if there’s anything wrong with their child. Toddlers display many odd behaviors, and most of them are par for the course of growing up.

Why toddlers prefer being naked all the time

There are several reasons why toddlers prefer being naked. You can do something about it if you know why she’s doing it. Here are some possible explanations.

It feels good to be naked.

Admit it, being naked feels good. At this point, your little one doesn’t care about social norms, so the child will just do her thing. Don’t worry, she’ll outgrow this habit once she starts fancying clothes and choosing what to wear.

    Her clothes are uncomfortable.

The consensus among the moms who replied is that the kid might not be comfortable with her clothes, or she feels hot wearing them.

"I think it’s normal. 24/7 kaming magkasama ng anak ko, walang malicious na kaganapan, hindi din sya hinihiram ng kahit sino pero ang hilig alisin ng damit niya," one mom said.

"Nagugulat ako naka-diaper na lang. Napansin ko ginagawa niya yun pag ayaw nya yung sinuot kong damit or super init ng panahon," the mom added.

She’s displaying new skills and independence.

It could also be a display of a toddler’s newfound skill of undressing. “Nakikita niya po ba na nagbibihis kayo sa harap niya?” asked another mom. She may only be copying what she sees her parents do when taking off their clothes. It’s also a way of testing boundaries, now that she can already do this independently.

    Your child wants your attention.

Do you remember how you reacted the first time you saw her take off all her clothes? If she got your attention, then it could be her way of wanting more quality time with you.

“When your child does something that elicits a response he likes, he will do it over and over again,” explains Moira Bunyi, who has an M.A. in Family Life and Child Development from the University of the Philippines.

If your toddler wants to be naked, let him be if you’re just at home. Try not to overreact or make it a big deal. Shor and offer more comfortable clothes to encourage him to dress up, but make sure they’re apt for the weather.

Moving forward, allow your toddler to choose her own clothes or be naked for at least 15 to 30 minutes to compromise.
