Meta is taking a big step toward safer social media for teens. The company has officially expanded its Teen Accounts feature to Facebook and Messenger, building on its initial launch on Instagram in 2024. This move gives users aged 13 to 17 a more secure and guided online experience, with built-in protections for privacy, content, and parental oversight.

The global rollout began on September 25, 2025, making these features available to millions of young users worldwide.

Teen Accounts: What Teens and Parents Should Know

“Teen Account protections were designed to address parents’ top concerns, with automatic safeguards that limit who their teens are talking to online, control the content they’re seeing, and help ensure their time is well spent,” Meta explained in a blog post.

Here’s how Teen Accounts work to keep teens safe online:

  • Limit interactions – Teen Accounts control who teens can contact, ensuring they only connect with people they already know or follow.

  • Filter content – Sensitive or inappropriate content is automatically filtered, and features like “Quiet Mode” help teens take breaks and avoid late-night scrolling.

  • Parental oversight – Teens under 16 need parental permission to adjust settings, while parents can monitor screen time, manage interactions, and review who their teens are connecting with.

The rollout started in select countries—the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia—before expanding globally.
