Imagine this: your period is delayed. You’ve been feeling a little off lately. Your breasts feel tender, and you don’t know whether it’s because your period is coming or because you’re on the family way. To be sure, you take a pregnancy test, but rather than helping you figure out what’s happening with your body, you get a faint positive result (Thanks a lot!).
A faint positive is when, instead of getting two clear lines to indicate pregnancy (positive), you get one clear line and a barely-there second line.
First, one must understand how a pregnancy test works. The kit detects the presence of hCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, in your urine. hCG is a hormone your body produces after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterus, otherwise known as implantation. The cells that produce the hCG eventually form the placenta.
Therefore, hCG in your urine = positive result, right? What, then causes a “faint positive”?

You’re pregnant.
Often, a faint positive is actually positive — it may just be too early into your pregnancy to tell. So, congratulations!
You’ve had a miscarriage recently.
If this is the case, chances are your body still has traces of hCG from your previous pregnancy. It may take a while before your hormone levels return to normal.
You’re taking fertility drugs.
If you’ve been trying to get pregnant and have been prescribed fertility drugs, know that many of them contain hCG. Therefore, the test kit can pick this up and show a false positive.
You might have some health issues.
Aside from pregnancy, one of the reasons a woman might get a faint positive pregnancy result is if she has a condition, often concerning the kidneys. In rare cases, this may be also indicate cancer.
The test kit is expired.
