This 'Coffee' Claims It's Safe for Preggos and Breastfeeding MomsIs this the answer for moms who can have their coffee fix without the guilt?by Rachel Perez .
To drink or not to drink coffee has been up for debate for pregnant and lactating women. Some doctors allow moms-to-be to have one small cup of coffee a day, while others would advise them to go cold turkey. The American Pregnancy Association (APA) advise nursing moms to lessen their caffeine intake if their babies seem fussy and wide awake. Caffeine is even "associated with a higher incidence of miscarriage and low birth weight," according to APA.
When you have a lot of these drink-do-not-drink missives, it feels like the safest thing to do is not drink coffee. A new product has been launched, however, that claims to provide your "coffee fix" but without the caffeine. It's called Barlico, and its makers claim that it is a safe and healthier alternative coffee substitute. It should taste like real coffee, but instead of an adrenaline rush, you are supposed to get a healthier boost with its ingredients.
Registered nutritionist dietician Athena Tiglao, R.N.D., of the Philippine Society of Nutritionists-Dietitians, explained that Barlico contains phosphorus, calcium, manganese, zinc, and selenium, which has anti-oxidant properties. "You can mix it with milk to increase its nutritional value. Instead of just getting calcium, you'll have all of these vitamins and minerals, too," she said.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW

Mompreneur Sasja Mulder, CEO and president of Barlico, attests that it's safe even for her toddler since it has no caffeine. Tiglao adds it can help boost breast milk production because of its main ingredient. "Barley oats promotes milk production, similar to malunggay."
When you're breastfeeding, you always need to eat something with sabaw, but then you might not fancy having tinola, halaan, or sinigang every day. Tiglao, who is also a working mom of three who experienced milk supply issues, says Barlico can be alternative to viands with soup.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Barlico, however, is not a meal supplement, Tiglao warns. "You also have to rule out if you have any allergies to barley," she cautions. If you are pregnant, check with your doctor before you drink it.
Barlico coffee substitute is available in Cappuccino (P110 for a box of 10), Chocolate (P120 for a box of 8), 3-1 (P80 for a box of 12), and Black (P80 or jar). Follow Barlico Philippines on Facebook and Instagram.
